May seem like a silly question, but are they particularly quiet animals?

They make a noise like a sheep being violated. Will blend right in.

Yes they are basically quiet animals unless a coyote, mountain lion or bear tries to come in their area.

Many ranchers here in California and Oregon use them to herd and protect sheep and calves by themselves from mountain lions and coyotes.

I have just heard them snort and a semi whinney. One didn't like my son who was a terrible 13 at the time. As soon as she saw him she would run up to the fence snort and spit on him. He never did anything to her, and that was her response to him the first and last time she saw him.
