Baalbeck has some of the biggest and best roman ruins outside of Italy.

Hate to say it, but that statement won't be correct in a few days. Those ruins will be referred to in the past tense, unfortunately. I hope I'm wrong.

You can find the Porta Nigra in Trier, Germany. The town is beautiful, and far away from the violence in the Middle East.

My brother-in-law and I got locked in the lower level of the Trier Cathedral one evening. Just down there looking around at tombs of cardinals and stuff, and bingo the lights go out. Pitch dark! luckily I smoke and had some matches. We finally found a door and took turns beating on it. We will always remember Trier alright.
