So, smoking isn't the only cause of lung disease and lung cancers.

I have mostly eliminated high fructose corn syrup from my diet...
I now seek out healthy, pure and when possible, organic foods for my family.
So much of the crap they put in Americans food is so bad for us...
Farm raised salmon, high fructose corn syrup, now this...

Don't worry, tobacco isn't the only thing the nanny statists want to ban. Butter, and butter flavoring, are certainly on the list. DDT, asbestos, freon, saccarine, cyclamates, PCBs, lead, and of course all the illegal drugs, are already gone or have been banned and brought back.

Of course not. Working in an old style coal mine, around asbestos or being exposed to a variety of known carcinogens.
But it tells you how bad smoking is for people that smoking dwarfs all those other causes put together.
That's why smoking needs to be a personal choice made by adults and not something you are allowed to do to someone in public place without their consent.

Diacetyl is also found in beer- particularly some Euro ales.
We are doomed!

Tell that to the ant-smoking Nazis, who attribute any lung cancer or heart disease to smoking or exposure to tobacco, however distant. Secondhand smoke, and yes, even thirdhand smoke (a non-smoking person exposed to a non-smoker exposed to a smoker) has been "linked" to all sorts of diseases in a way that would cause honest epidemiologists to cringe or roll in their graves.

Don't forget alcohol, gambling and pornography.

No, that is incorrect! It is the ONLY cause. These people must have had smoking parents, or must have sat in a bar at one time in their life, or walked by a smoker on the sidewalk... /sarcasm

reminds me of reading once that peanuts would never be approved as a food additive as they have very high levels of some toxin or carcinogen or such - this is when Jimmy Carters family were dropping like flies to cancer - and they always had the tub of peanuts around.

Annie's Organic Brand is GREAT! They have chocolate cookies, cheese crackers and they only use whole, organic products. They taste good too!
The problem is finding affordable (four kids) cereal that is organic and w/o corn syrup.

Not to worry... With a name like "diacetyl," and given the fact that it destroys your lungs, it's surely toxic when INHALED. Probably quite safe to eat. Inhaling water is deadly. The thing is most substances never really get to do much damage because the lungs can keep them out. Certain aerosols (and again, diacetyl sounds like an aerosol) which are hardly harmful at the microbiotic level wreak havoc on the lungs. Case in point: Chlorine (a gas, actually, not a true aerosol) destroys the lungs as a gas, but as a dilute fluid, you literally bathe in it.

I ws limiting myself to chemicals, and I sure left off a biggie with alcohol - probably the biggest. I forgot about MTBE too - something that was forced upon us for "environmental" reasons (to replace tetraethyl lead in gasoline) and then found wanting itself.
