The problem with Romney is that he has no concrete identity.
He ran more as a Liberal to capture the Governor's seat in MASS.
Now he is trying to run more conservatively to capture the Republican primary nod for President.
For good or ill everyone knows where the others stand. In Romney's case, he opens himself to the label of a 'flip flopper'. IMO, that hurts him.
Maybe he's not out of it, but a candidate that lacks a strong policy identity is subject to their character being made the campaign issue. As happened with Kerry. Do Republican activists want to risk it? I'm not convinced. Republican candidates tend to perform better at the polls when issues are the subject, rather then character.
