The Circus Comes to Malibu (Mel Gibson:First the humiliation, then the redemption)
NRO ^ | August 01, 2006 | Jack dunphy

Posted on 08/01/2006 5:37:15 AM PDT by IrishMike

Things have reached a pretty pass when reports of a celebrity’s drunken misbehavior and anti-Semitic rants are treated as bigger news than an actual war in Israel. But there you have it, life in America in 2006, and for the moment Mel Gibson’s encounter with a deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is The Story. Tel Aviv could be in flames and I’m not sure it would push Gibson’s sordid little tale off the front pages. We don’t see many celebrities in the part of town where I work, and as I’m employed by the Los Angeles Police Department, not the sheriff’s department, I don’t have any inside information on what went on out there on Pacific Coast Highway and later at the Lost Hills sheriff’s station that night. But you don’t need any inside information to figure out how things went down: Gibson got drunk, got stopped, and got arrested. And along the way he decided to make an even bigger fool of himself than all but the most cantankerous of drunk drivers.

The criminal case against Gibson after all is the least of his problems. First-time offenders (and there haven’t been any reports of prior arrests) don’t do jail time for drunk driving in California unless they hurt someone in an accident, and Gibson can surely afford whatever fine he may be ordered to pay. He will of course plead guilty; for the sake of his film career he needs to get the criminal case over with as quickly as possible. But there is a more important reason for him to plead guilty: The deputy who arrested Gibson has an audio tape of his alleged orations on the role of Jews in world affairs, and a sergeant videotaped his antics...station.

Gibson, of course, has a long history of anti-semitism. His father denies the holocaust, and Mel recently made a movie about a Jewish man being betrayed and murdered by his fellow Jews.

I suppose Abe Foxman never forgave hillary either./sarc

I am amazed at the selected outrage here. Those who resent Mel Gibson making the Passion in the first place, are coming out with glee to now condemn him as if they really care.

The whole episode makes me sick. His remarks were awful, but I doubt no one more than he regrets them. This righteous indignation coming out, however is quite interesting to watch, especially when most of them support HRC without hesitation and she said the same damn thing.

Spare me!!

"Jack Dunphy" doesn't have the guts to use his own name....

Mel is a bigoted idiot...but "Jack Dunphy" is a coward.

This is a great article, and he nails it, but I swear to God I thought he was going to say the Gibson, instead of blaming his behavior on his illness, would blame it on George Bush. That would have been a hoot.

Mel: Join the club!!
Enjoy rehab!

Certain alarming and deplorable news stories concerning the way Americans sometimes seek to attain “the edge” over their competitors or just their own weaker selves, remind us that the pharmaceutical, alcohol, and drug “industry” (not us) in America may be out of control.

First, as last weekend kicked off, we were faced with a news story featuring Mel Gibson. Mel, the only Hollywood big shot to recently produce a major motion picture about Jesus, was picked up and charged with Driving Under the Influence (of alcohol) (DUI) in Malibu. If that wasn’t bad enough, Mel, according to the arresting officer and his recorded audio tape of every word, may have gotten a tad vocal during the arrest and booking.

A family newspaper cannot print the exact words Mel used to berate the arresting officer, but let’s just say it was a four letter word that started with an “F” and ended with a “k.”

Mel only used this word about 150 times during his short though wonderful association with the arresting officer.

Mel also imprudently opined that he owned Malibu and would use all his money to get even with the arresting officer and his force.

To make bad into worse, Mel also went into an anti-Semitic tirade. Mel apparently blames Jews for killing Jesus and just about everyone else.

Wherever Mel was before he drove into Hollywood legend last week, we sure hope it was a GREAT party.

We were told that Mel called Nick Nolte to help him make bail.

But Mel’s conduct is hardly bizarre by modern American standards. A few weeks ago, the multi-millionaire heir to the Coors beer fortune was arrested for DUI in his driveway. He had slowly eased through a “stop” sign without coming to a complete halt while going home from a wedding.

Performance enhancing, or just plain “fun inducing” substances are a part of American life. Barry Bonds is now the poster child for steroid use and abuse, even though he has been charged with nothing and we have little to go on as evidence: unless you count his remarkable growth, girth and homer record.

Just last night, Justin Gatlin, the world and Olympic 100 meter champion, the “fastest man in the world,” faced a life ban after admitting he had failed a drugs test. WOW! At least this guy can run from the law if necessary.

Cancer survivor Lance Armstrong, the bicycle “wunderkind” that the French love to hate, has also been under a cloud of suspicion for his evil habits. The French say Lance has been shooting steroids forever. Sac le bleu! Lance denies all the French accusations. But his girlfriend was Sheryl Crowe so I’ve decided whatever he is using is O.K. with me!

Lance’s successor in the American Bicycle Hall of Fame was also accused by the French and others of using too much, let us say, “male hormone.” But he says he is naturally packed and I saw his wife on TV smiling BIG time when he won the Tour de France and I suspect that wasn’t all about bicycling.

Finally, Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota was informed last week that his 81 year old Dad was caught naked in a car with a 38 year old woman. She was also naked. The car was parked in “broad” daylight next to Red Savoy's Pizza. Red said he had no idea what was on the pizza but he offered to sell us a “slice.” Norm’s Dad could not be reached for comment but his wife, Norm’s Mom, Beverly, said she was shocked by the entire “affair.” Norm’s Dad is now the poster child for the little blue pill…in old peoples’ homes everywhere.

So next time you find a friend, coworker or family member having just too much fun, remind them that this happens now and again. Blame the pharmaceutical, alcohol, and drug “industry.”

But addiction and drug abuse are serious matters so get help. We intend only to educate and inform here in the Examiner.

And if you have any aspirations about making a film about Jesus we suggest you do that before you end up arrested like Mel Gibson.

John E. Carey writes from Falls Church Virginia. He is completely sober after a bout with alcoholism which he informs us was no fun at all.

Again , I ask why was the Malibu police officer putting
actual QUOTES from a basic DUI arrest in a police report which was now 8 pages long ? What was his or her agenda ?
Does these cops sell juicy celebrity arrest reports to Hollywood gossip people or are they trying to get into the business via blackmail ? And why do we care what Mel Dad has to say anyways ! And now reports of suicide ! This a real slick smear campaign being waged by some one or some company. We will never know the real story here !

The man has made a fool out of himself publicly.

He may be crazy.

But, he's one of many and I gotta deal with the ones in my neck of the woods.

I don't have any sympathy for any of them and myself as well, if and when I would exercise such poor judgement.

Ol' Mel's Guarding Angel must be the same one who appears in that bank card commercial where he (the guarding angel) is otherwise preocupied when his charge (Mel) is stepping into it.

Good or Bad publicity does not matter, as long as they keep their names in the news.

Jack apparently refuses to consider even the possibility that an apology from an actor could be sincere.

Sure, actors make their living by lying.

That doesn't mean everything they say is a lie.

Is it me or does anyone else not see the hypocrisy of Hollywood, ostensibly kosher with the Hezbo attacks on Israel, jumping on Mel for SAYING something as opposed to actually KILLING Jews?

"the ones who were partying when Moses came down from the mountain."

Great line! I will plagiarize it as soon as possible! An old friend of mine named Gomberg, who kept an AR15 handy at all times and took "never again" seriously, used to call these Barbara Striesand types "Poodle Jews".

You may be right---I reserve judgment---but like Oliver Stone, whom I despise, the man can make powerful movies. In his case, they usually have the right themes and the correct interpretation.

What really gets me , is how ready everyone is to stone Mel Gibson, a lifetime of good, and one stupid mistake and drunken rant, and he is worthless piece of dog doo.
