Take a close look at the weather map and you will see that the mid west, North and South Dakota and Minn are all under the influence of a cool front. What happens is that SW and west winds create a temperature inversion ahead of the front so it gets really hot "just before" the front comes through. That is what is going on in the middle of the country where you see the 94 and 95 degree readings. In a few days they too will cool off as long as the front keeps dropping to the south and east.
