Brownback's bill, dubbed the Assisted Suicide Prevention Act, marks the first legislative assault on assisted suicide since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Oregon's law in January.

"When the law permits killing as a medical 'treatment,' society's moral guidelines are blurred, and killing could gain acceptance as a solution for the chronically ill or vulnerable," said Brownback, a favorite of religious conservatives who is considering a run for president.

Oh, what heady days those were, when Lieberman rode shotgun for his entire political party. But then came the Iraq war, Terri Schiavo, the imminently blog-a-licious kiss, and a stunningly whiny campaign in which Lieberman took umbrage that the electorate was willing to offload him after 18 years of free haircuts and multiple rides in the senator-only elevator. He did more than that, but he also attached his wagon to Bush's fading star once (or twice) too often. And so the electorate handed the election to upstart Ned Lamont, who presented himself as the anti-war candidate and more.
