Yes, he is an idiot and has a drinking problem but to call him a bad actor and worse director is, in my opinion, incorrect.
When will Slate accuse Cindy McKinney of being sick with Jew hatred?
You are exactly correct. It is as if the MSM think that Gibson's antics somehow besmirch his contribution of the "Passion". I see a pattern here. Remember Rush and his painkillers? The MSM was salivating over it. How about the old "addiction is a disease"? I guess it only works is you are a washed up hollywood star or a Kennedy.
Bobby Fischer was the greatest chess player of all time. His recent pontifications over the supposed "scourge of the Jews" takes nothing away from his shess genius. I look at Gibson the same way.
I normally like Christopher Hicthens but this article is just silly. Not to defend Mel..his actions are indefensible (though I would note he isnt trying to defend them)But this is just a petty bit of ad hominem. Actually it goes further than that into a sort of anti christian rant where he slams Mel Bison for horror of horror's portraying that the Jews killed Christ. Or heaven forbid that he actually beleive that his wife would be damned for not being a catholic. This is not a view I submscribe to and I pity that Mel should feel this way..but my wife's grandmother beliecves the same thing about non catholics and she doesnt have a nasty bone in her body. It just her faith. Is it possible that Mel might not be being nasty when he says he doesnt beleiev his wife is saved but speaking from a position of concern. He may be wrong but it doesnt make him insincere or a horrible person.
Frankly it sounds like Mr. Hitchens has always had a problem with Mel and has used this unfortunatley incident as an oportunity to attack him.
It is plain silly to claim that Mel is a poor film maker or a bad actor. It is even more silly to attack his faith and his religion. It shows a wanting of good character on Hitchens part.
It seems certain that Mel has some antisemetic issue he needs to work on and seek forgiveness for...but this peice by Mr. Hitchens is just pathetic.
I agree seeing I think Mel is a great actor!
Lay off Hitchens. He was probably drunk when he wrote this :)
Did you see the Patriot? It was baaaaaad! Brave Heart is one long big torture scene that proves that "Mel can take it like a man!". He has not made a decent film in years.
I personally have said very bad things while in an extremely enebriated state which were not contained in my heart. For that reason I can forgive Mel Gibson......
