Parts of U.S. West Bar Tree-Cutting on Private Land

SALMON, Idaho — In a state where pine and fir outnumber residents, the loss of several privately owned spruces should hardly excite attention, let alone spark a crusade emblematic of a new trend to protect trees on private land.

But in the ski community of Ketchum, Idaho, a seasonal home for the rich and famous and the last resting place of writer Ernest Hemingway, a developer's plan to cut down three towering conifers on his property spurred the city to issue an emergency order last month outlawing the felling of mature trees.

Resident Lara Babalis wanted additional assurances. She spent days collecting signatures on a petition to save the spruces and engaged in an extended vigil beneath the trees in the hours before the cutting ban was to go into effect.

When Babalis interrupted her trespassing vigil to walk her dogs, a construction worker delivered a deathblow to the 80-year-old evergreens. "A guy with a chain saw showed up the minute I took a break. By the time I came back, they were dying," she said.

No private property rights = no rights at all. Frickin commies will take over the country if we let them.

America, do not go down this path: it is well-trodden in New Zealand and you will rue the day when you cannot chop (or even prune) a "significant" tree on your own d*mn' property.

You will give rise to an entirely new layer of bureaucracy. A new layer of courts and fines and sticky-beak neighbors who somehow get to have an opinion on what you can and cannot do on your own land.

You will find that a "significant" tree has more rights than you have: and if said tree has roots that are damaging your home's foundation and plugging up the pipes: too bad. Prune or chop at your peril, it is better your house fall into disrepair and be demolished than cause the untimely demise of an unwanted, "significant" tree.

In the end, pointy-headed-intellectual kids straight out of college working for the City will decide what you can do on your own d*mn property: if you let them!

You have been warned from afar...

Trees are a crop - they are a renewable resource. It just takes longer than most crops to grow.

These people that want everything we have now or had some time ago to remain that way forever are themselves "going against nature" as change and extinction (local or Earth-wide) are natural things.

I see that some parts of America are experiencing democracy.

Of the mob, by the mob, for the mob, your individual rights will now be abrogated by the democratic mob who will democratically carry out the goals of the Marxist common good. Maybe next the democratic mob can rule that complaining that your rights are being stolen is against the law.

"The community is outraged with that type of behavior," said City Manager Ron LeBlanc."

If the "environmentalists" or their "charities" are for it, oppose it. If they're against it, support it.

"Environmentalists" are far more destructive of liberty, justice, and the protection of the rights of the individual than any good they do for the environment.

And NEVER give one penny to an "environmentalist charity"!

Eco-fascists. They would rather allow forests to burn down in a firestorm so they can drive human beings out of living in the mountains.

Ah

The only county in the state of Idaho that went the wrong (read Democrat)way. In the words of the great writer, whomever he was, "you reap what you sow." It truly is a shame about that place because it is beautiful up there. I always feel the need to shower after I leave the Ketchum/Sun Valley area though. You can cut the self-hating white liberal aura with knife.

If you think you own "your land", try not paying the property taxes on it for a couple of years. You'll find out in a hurry who REALLY owns it.

The big con is how the goobermint gets US to pay for insurance, upkeep, improvements, "permits", etc. - all the while collecting rent from the "owner".
