>>(Ever see the 1960s anti-war movie On The Beach? Remember when Fred Astaire kills himself by breathing the fumes of his prized sports car in his closed garage? A modern car doesn't emit enough CO for this to work anymore.)

I do not think that this is a true statement, and I would strongly dissuade anyone from trying to prove me wrong. Seriously.

You're right. You MAY not die from CO poisoning but you will die from oxygen deprivation caused by CO2 taking the place of the usable oxygen in the garage.

A bit of a reckless statement on the part of the author in his zeal to make a point.

Dude, the car would stop running from lack of oxygen well before levels of CO reached lethality. Now, whether the SO4 from the catylitic converter's action and what sulphur is in gasoline did you in...well, that's a whole 'nother thang.

He speaks the truth.

The earth is warming, but it's because of solar conditions. Hydrogen takes more energy to produce than it can supply from its combustion. The same applies to ethanol. Methanol is OK if you work on your car three hours for every half hour in operation.

Drilling for more oil and exploiting oil shales while we ACTIVELY AND CONSISTENTLY develop making gasoline from domestic coal is our only real hope for energy independence during the next 75 years, barring devastation from war or economic crisis.
