Sad to say, but I believe Mel just said what he really believed all along. I trully pray he can get back on the wagon. However, I'm afraid his credibility is somewhat at question now.
For people who are not alcoholics or have not studied the disease in depth, let me make one FACT perfectly clear.
Alcohol is NOT a truth serum. Quite the opposite. Alcohol is a LIAR serum. It is an insidious poisen on the nervous system that creats hallucinations and all sorts of fantasies.
