For what it's worth, a local SoCal TV station just went on the air basically confirming this version of the arrest (although not providing quite so much detail). They cited additional sources "at the Sheriff's department".

Mel Gibson, 50, `Mad Max' Actor, Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

July 28 (Bloomberg) -- Mel Gibson, the actor who has portrayed characters such as ``Mad Max'' and directed ``The Passion of the Christ,'' was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving early today, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's department spokesman said.

Gibson, 50, was pulled over by a deputy on California's Pacific Coast Highway at about 2:30 a.m. for driving above the speed limit, spokesman Steve Whitmore said in an interview.

``The deputy smelled alcohol on his breath'' and conducted a field sobriety test, Whitmore said. ``And he was arrested.''

Gibson was released at about 9:45 a.m. with a citation. The sheriff's department is in the middle of investigating the matter, Whitmore said. Gibson's publicist Alan Nierob didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.

Gibson won two Oscars in 1995 for best picture and best director for the movie ``Braveheart,'' in which he also starred as Sir William Wallace, according to Internet Movie Database.
