Bill Will Also Allow Schools To Discipline Students For Conduct
(CBS) PLAINFIELD, IL -- With more teenagers and young adults posting profiles on MySpace.com, state lawmakers are looking for a way to make it safer.
CBS 2's Rafael Romo reports a new bill in Springfield would give authorities more power to crack down on sexual predators.
As a frequent user of social networking Web sites such as MySpace.com and Facebook, Adam Lawler says nothing surprises him anymore.
"You get people that are a little too old talking to people that are a little too young. I've heard some bad stories about it, but it's still a good tool, nonetheless. It's a time-killer," said Lawler.
The Web sites let people of all ages post pictures and other personal information. But they're also places where child predators go to lure young victims.
"Some of the worst was a link to my daughter's site, which took me to a link of a boy that was naked with a girl sitting on his lap fully clothed. That's pornography!" said Robin Ambrosia, a mother of a MySpace user.
State Rep. Tom Cross (R-Oswego) is introducing a bill that would give police more power to track child pornography on those Web sites.
"This legislation is designed to recognize that which goes on," said Cross. "We're in a different age than we were 10 or 15 years ago and we have to adapt."
Under current law, explicit sexual communications over the Internet with a minor is not a crime, but Cross's bill is also trying to change that. Several law enforcment agencies now have investigators tracking activity on networking Web sites. But authorities say they also need the help of parents.
"You put a computer in your kid's bedroom with the door shut. You might as well give them a loaded gun," said Will County State's Attorney William Glasgow.
Cross's bill would also allow schools to discipline students for their conduct on the Internet.
TALKING is illegal? This seems to be going to far...
man, they LOVE keeping "My Space" and hammering it in your face, while ignoring MSN, AOL, yahoo!, and hundreds of others......the only difference is that "My Space" is operated by News Corp, the parent company of FOXNEWS.
Where've you been? Parental rights have been dead for years. It's the state's job to raise kids. :-)
OOOOOOOH YEAH, Welp, I guess I'll just stop telling my daugher what to do starting today, NOT!!!
MySpace users also have the ability to report offensive material, and in most cases such material is banned. I should reiterate, that any user has a choice, by either allowing another user to be a "friend" or not, what material they are exposed to on any online forum or social networking site. Common sense obviously does not prevail among young people, therefore parenst must get more involved with what their children do.
A few months ago a network did a story on internet sexual predators who had chatted with girls on line. They got all the pervs, which is good.
I wondered if they would do another story about snaring the kids who chat about sexual things on line with guys, then going to their parents with the proof.
Guess I'll have to wait for that one.....
I admit to not having read the entire article but...
I hope they take into account the fact that teenagers will often lie about thier age.
Say you're 20 and talking to a girl that says she's 19 but is actually 16... What'cha gonna do when they come for you?
I would hope that the perp would have to knowingly engage in sex talk with a minor. But somehow, I doubt it's the case.
It seems that it ought to be the parents' job to monitor MySpace blogs.
You are seriously misinformed. All you need is any email address to get an account.
this law will never stand. It is definately unenforcable.
I read an article a while back that said there are a lot of teenage girls soliciting sex in the online chat areas, most for the thrill or adventure of it. I think that they should also be arresting those little darlings and prosecuting them for prostitution.
What!?! Come on now, we all know, or at least those of us with common sense know, that the only way to keep your children safe in any "world" is to regualate their activities. Know what they are doing, where they go, who they are with, etc. If you don't do that, you're not a proper parent, IMO. Parenting is not easy, just like the kids say, being a kid is not easy. Properly taught children will do the right thing, it's a proven fact. For your story on fornicating kids, just look at the statistics of kids having kids and you'll know they do more than they should.
Nope. The internet doesn't need govenment meddling.

"I'm a hot 15 year old girl and I want to lose my virginity to a man over 30."
MySpace isn't a tool. It's a place where tools hang out. There's a difference. :)
