HELENA, Mont. Sen. Conrad Burns confronted members of a Virginia firefighting team at an airport and told them they had done a "poor job" battling a southern Montana wildfire, according to a state official's report obtained Thursday.
A spokesman for the Montana senator confirmed that Burns talked to the firefighters but said he couldn't comment on the conversation because he didn't witness it.

Conrad Burns must be a real jerk.
Live on a flood plain and be mad the water rises.
Go to war zone and throw a fit when the bullets fly.
Experience a known local phonomena, wildfires and lash out at those with shovels and water.
This nation is so spoiled and devoid of personal responsibility it makes one shudder ( and other profane things). If it wasn't for 10 percent of this country serving in the military or as first responders the rest would cease to exist.
To those first responders and heavy lifters reading this......
THANK YOU!
Unfortunately, Conrad Burns is one of those GOPers who's going to hand the Senate to the Dems in November.
Firefighter unions are 99.9% Democrat and very active. Don't think for a minute this couldn't be being exaggerated.
I've voted for him every time he has run. I'll vote for him again.
Burns does what he says he's going to and most if not all of his positions are highly conservative.
If Burns called a spade a spade.
It's spade.
Firefighter unions might be democratic, but those around here who do the heavy lifting are not.
Virginia?
Most firefighters in my area are forced to have their dues pay for Dem party support, but vote Republican. Here is an indication: Firefighter personal vehicles have the following stickers: IAFF Union, NRA, "Firefighters for Bush", and "Pray for our troops". Talk about conflicted.
Stick a fork in Burns, he's done.
If he did this, yep.
Dressing down firefighters who've come across the country to your state is a brain-dead thing to do and totally disqualifying for a US Senator.
The International Association of Firefighters of which I have been a member for 40 years does indeed go with Democrats many times. That does not mean they are 99% Democrats. In fact most Firefighters are Conservative.
The leadership under President Schitberger has sucked.
In the last presidential election he and the Executive Board took it amongst themselves to endorse the democrat candidate, they caught hell for it from rank and file and promised to do better. I dont really expect any better because Schitberger is enamored with the leadership of AFL-CIO. They fluff him a bit and he goes to his knees.
The firefighters in my community formed a "firefighters for Bush" group with their own money and handed out BC04 bumper stickers any chance they could.
Part of the reason they did this was due to IAFF supporting Kerry w/o consulting locals.
Thanks to the USFS firefighters a small 100 square foot blaze was allowed to turn into a 160,000 acre out of control inferno 3 years ago here in CO. The Hayman fire.
Local fire fighters were not allowed to help, mining companies with large Cats were refused permission to cut fire breaks, the list is nearly endless.
The blame for the entire mess lays squarely at the feet of the same kind of guys Burns is talking about.
We now have huge mud slides every time it rains.
To top it all off, the fire was deliberately set by a US Forest Service worker.
Burns may be dead on.
Our experience here would confirm what he said.
Agreed...I've been a member for 20. Paid FF DFW area.
Conrad used to be my Senator. He's stauchly prolife, pro 2-A and against tax increases. He's a former Marine. If he chewed the firefighters out for doing a crappy job, it was because they did a crappy job! 'Nuff said.
The membership may not vote that way in private but the union goes democrat almost straight across.
..hmmmmm...Can't agree with you on that....my brother in law who is a big land owner up at Flat Head Lake is a staunch conservative....in fact, he ran Pat Buchanan's campaign in Montana and then saw the light about Pat after that and quit him...but he has met Conrad Burns many times and while yes, he is very conservative, he also was involved with Jack Abramhoff and was, well let's say better then the opponent....."and that is all he is"....
