ACLU pleased by ban's lifting: Surprise Vote Ends Gay Rights Conflict

Local members of the American Civil Liberties Union cheered Tuesday's surprise vote by the Los Altos City Council to rescind a ban on proclamations regarding sexual orientation.

"We are pleased with the council's decision. But we're going to be watching to make sure the new rule is applied equally," said Tamara Lange, a staff attorney with the ACLU of Northern California.

City officials approved the ban in February after the Gay Straight Alliance of Los Altos High School asked the council -- for a third year in a row -- to OK a proclamation declaring a citywide Gay Pride Day.

Councilman David Casas argued that proclamations should be limited to city businesses or to honor citizens for good work. Three of the five council members, including Mayor Ron Packard, agreed.

The move sent shock waves through the bedroom community of 28,000 and the Bay Area, capturing the attention of the media -- and the ACLU.

The ACLU helped organize students and residents who attended council meetings July 11 and Tuesday, sporting red T-shirts that read: "Proclaim Equality."

ACLU officials said they also implied the threat of a lawsuit when they filed a Public Records Act request with the city, backed by lawyers from legal powerhouse Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

During a half-hour news conference before Tuesday's council meeting, nearly three dozen business owners and residents called for the council to rescind the rule.

"We believe this city rule plainly discriminates against people based on sexual orientation," said business owner Peter Yessne. "It is an embarrassment for many of us living and working in Los Altos, and it belies a governmental commitment to all its citizens."

"On a cost-benefit analysis, I see little advantage to continue the provisions as now stated," he wrote in the memo.

ACLU officials said the Gay Straight Alliance plans to ask for a Gay Pride Day proclamation again next year. ------------ Ugh. City proclamations endorsing homos. Not having such proclamations is "discrimination." Maybe it's time for a "Heterosexual Pride" proclamation.

Are they actually serious? Are they going to wait and make sure "Straight Pride Day" is approved??? Or are they insinuating that the council already has plans for a "Straight Pride" day, and they'll be watching to make sure the homos get equal time? Either possibility is nothing short of ludicrous.

Great, they can proclaim their gayness. Big deal. Hopefully now they will shut up and we don't have to keep hearing from them about how gay they are.

I'm in Los Altos and everyone I've talked to here was annoyed by the original request for a proclamation and parade, and I'm sure will be annoyed by this too. We just want to be left alone. Is that too much to ask? Apparently it is.

Maybe it's time for a "Heterosexual Pride" proclamation.

I forgot to say, I was thinking of creating the Ladies' Man F***ers Club and starting my own proclamation. (I hope that's enough asterisks to make this family safe!)

We're just girls who want to proclaim our sexual preference for men, loudly and obnoxiously, but we don't want to be judged or identified based upon it!

Join the LMF Club! ;)

Nope, they're going to ensure that gays get an equal percentage of proclamations. So if they congratulate a couple on fifty years of marriage, they better do something for homosexuals as well. This is their version of equality.

It is pretty sad that any person would choose their sexual proclivity as their most defining quality. It is just as annoying to hear a heterosexual go on about their sexual escapades. There are gay people in America...we get it. Gay men have sex with each other and further more, they are proud of it! Do they write a letter to their parents every time or what? I think they should have to follow the same rules we do...you can be proud about it your first time....after that, no one wants to hear it!

Wrong on so many counts:
CA District 21 as a whole is 44% D and 32% R, but Los Altos is 50/50.

Richest zip codes
#20 94024 LOS ALTOS
#26 94022 LOS ALTOS
#49 94301 PALO ALTO
#85 94306 PALO ALTO

So pfft! Palo Alto hardly registers! Guess those Bush-hating, latte sipping, birkenstock wearing, Volvo driving, libs over in PA don't have time to make any money.

In arguments at the court of appeals Lambda attorney Tamara Lange argued that the amendment turned "lesbian and gay people into political outcasts."

In pursuit of its mission, LAMBDA focuses on support, education, and advocacy through INFORM, CREATE CHANGE AND SUPPORT.

"In no uncertain terms, the Court overruled its decision in Bowers v. Hardwick, which, for 17 years, has allowed the government to treat lesbian, gay and bisexual people as second-class citizens".

Documents obtained by Judicial Watch, a public interest law firm, reveal that three homosexual advocacy groups in San Francisco shared information with the mayor's office (Gavin Newsom), ranging from "talking points" on same-sex marriage to legal advice.
