Let us create a future of infinite possibilities devoid of the agenda of the social engineers who work their corruption on us thru the one way world of television . A world where anything is possible , but not everything is possible . Anything can happen , but not all things can happen at once . That is what 'Time' is for , to keep all things from happening at the same moment . That shall be the only rule of our new fantasy world . That an event happens only once . What has been done , cannot be undone . There is no turning back the sands of time . You can review the past but you cannot change the past . That a vision of a possible future - to the present , must be taken in the context of the present . A Cosmos not governed by compassion or tolerance or equality , but common sense and merit . A Universe of strange and totally new lifeforms and not distorted reflections of human characters , just to make some social allegory ---- THAT is the insipid barren road of Political Correctness that Sci-fi entertainment has been a slave to for so many years . The future is not the current events of our world thrown into Outer Space . The future is not with the Liberals , not with the Multiculturalists (both hate America) , and it is certainly not to be found in some cheapo TV production made in Canada ! The future is not written , the future is unformed . . .

Back off! There's nothing puerile or unamerican about Rod Serling. He was a paratrooper in WW II who earned a purple heart and a bronze star. As far as I'm concerned he set the bar for television scifi back before anyone else even realized what was possible.

Yeah, I know, you've seen it all before... but Serling was there first. Further, he wrote and awful lot of those shows himself. Modern televison's scifi stands on his shoulders.

Sterling led the way, and he was as All American as they come. You leave Rod Serling alone. p>

L. Neil Smith. His North American Confederacy, Henry Martin, and Roswell, TX universes are a wealth of sci-fi material. In the NAC series, the alternate time lines alone would provide more than enough material to cover a 10 year run.

I can't believe no one has brought up Iain M. Banks yet. His Culture books provide nearly as limitless a selection of plot lines as El Neil's stuff does. Considering the Culture spans tens of thousands of years as a civilization, the possiblities are vast.

Ursula K. Le Guin would be another one. While Earthsea miniseries really didn't live up to it's potential, this was mostly because Ursula wasn't consulted on anything. The Left Hand of Darkness deserves at least it's own miniseries.

Dan Simmons' and his Hyperion Universe.

David Weber's Empire.

Anne McCaffery's Dragons of Pern.

Michael Moorecock's Eternal Champion.

Terry Brooks and his Shannara saga.

Asimov. Heinlein. Herbert. Clarke....

No... coming up with new ideas for mini-series, movies, or even regular seasonal series, isn't the problem. The problem is mediocrity. Polishing a turd until someone buys it.

How else do you explain Sci-fi movies like Sabertooth and Minotaur? How else do you explain a Sci-Fi channel with friggin' WRESTLING.

I never cared for Lexx. I can accept wierd alien life forms, but not a galaxy populated by puppets. Ditto with Farscape and Babylon 5.

Bring back Fire Fox.

Screw it. Bring back "Firefly". Best sci-fi series ever created, hands down, bar none.

The future is not written , the future is unformed . . .

For the Future you have to go back to the past, say 1930
or so. Astounding! or any one of the myriad publications
when there were no limits.

Your entire premise is faulty. Star Trek had a GIANT (HA! Got one past the huge police)impact on the future. Flip phones, scientists exploring the possibilities of warp travel, medical advances that I can't even begin to list here, social patterns and even NASA programs - no matter how misguided. STNG did an episode 12 years ago named "I Borg." It was a direct correlation to the current WOT - so right on target it is scary.

The current scifi treats include DR. Who, Battlestar Galactica and yes SG versions. BG can in NO way be deemed politically correct. SG is very politically correct due to the younger audiences it draws. Firefly and the movie Serenity are outstanding comments on the human condition. Even the new Eureka has some interesting takes on the human condition. Maybe you should go read Dune again or better yet suffer through the movie and get your warp field centered. :-)

This is the original essay, in whole, that I wrote in early 2001 !
To be sure, the original writing has been cleaned up of typos over the years . .

With the passing away of LEXX ends an intriguing albeit tawdry experiment in Sci-fantasy. One that breaks with conventions, or should I say cliches of TV sci-fi of the 90's . The politically correct pabulum, the multicultural indoctrination, the BladeRunner motifs, and not the least; the steroid mutated superbabes that can punch the lights out of men, but never get punched back in return !? ~ ~ How about creating a new sci-fi anthology with none of the puerile baggage of Rod Serling, Rockne Obannon, Michael J. Stracinsky, etc .. It is time to end their reign of unAmerican , cynicism and fatalism ...

A Universe of strange and totally new lifeforms and not distorted reflections of human characters , just to make some social allegory ----
THAT is the insipid barren road of Political Correctness that Sci-fi entertainment has been a slave to for so many years . The future is not the current events of our world thrown into Outer Space .

The future is not with the Liberals , not with the Multiculturalists (both hate America) , and it is certainly not to be found in some cheapo TV production made in Canada ! The future is not written , the future is unformed . . .

With much thought and reflection,

-'C'-

I watched Lexx a few times years ago. I'm surprised it was still on the air. I thought it was pretty stupid.
