Well, this is why a 'combined arms' move is typically done. Their 'commanding view' would be outdone by the aerial view from Apache's, Kiowas, J-STARS, C130 gunships, etc over the battlefield.
Ground troops, light armor, heavy armor, air support and artillery support all work together.
As previously noted, like Cassino Italy or anywhere in Germany or Russia in WW2 the rubble makes it easier to hide. How high is the rubble of a four story building? High enough that a tank gunner can not see beyond it. It might as well be a hedge.
If you leave a few walls in place with windows, it at least gives you targeting ability when they do shoot at you.
Rubble didn't help Zarqawi or his friends... because the explosions and falling ruble usually kill lots of enemy.
