While extremely inappropriate, a well-meaning person could make this kind of statement on the spur of the moment without realizing how bad it sounds.

Without knowing anything else about Bevilaqua, I'll reserve judgment, though from the other comments the verdict sounds bad.

If such a remark was prepared, or not sincerely apologized for afterward, that's totally unacceptable, and most likely anti-Semitic in motivation.

No, Johnny Z, I don't think a well meaning person could make this kind of statement, even spur of the moment.

And ole Bob isn't well meaning.
