WASHINGTON, July 26, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Although the US Senate Tuesday overwhelmingly ratified a bill that makes it a crime for minors to be transported across state lines for an abortion to circumvent parental notification laws, a move by the Senate Democratic leadership immediately erected a procedural roadblock in an attempt to kill the bill.
The Senate turned aside all weakening amendments to the Child Custody Protection Act (S. 403), sponsored by Nevada Senator John Ensign, and voted 65-34 to approve the bill. Immediately following the vote to pass the bill, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tennessee) made a routine move to allow appointment of a conference committee to work out differences with a bill already passed by the House that contains different but related provisions. This routine move was objected to, on behalf of Senate Democrats, by the assistant Democratic leader, Sen. Dick Durbin (Illinois).
"Fourteen Democratic senators voted to pass the bill, but only minutes later the Democratic caucus collectively moved to kill the bill by objecting to the routine, necessary step of sending the bill to a conference committee," said National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) Legislative Director Douglas Johnson. "The Senate Democratic leadership is now obstructing legislation supported by 80 percent of the public, doing the bidding of the abortion lobby. They are ignoring the 80 percent of the public that believes parental notification laws protect vulnerable minors and the rights of parents."
Fifty-one Republicans voted for the bill. The four Republicans who voted against it were: Sens. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, Susan Collins of Maine, Olympia Snowe of Maine and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., was absent.
Following passage of the bill, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, commented, "We're going to sacrifice a lot of girls' lives," according to an AP report.
"This legislation defends parent's authority over their children because as parents, they are best equipped to handle the physical, emotional and psychological health of their child," commented Concerned Women for America's (CWA) Director of Government Relations, Lanier Swann. "Circumventing the law by crossing state lines with an older boyfriend, friend or anyone other than a parent fiercely undermines a parents' right to protect their child. Moreover, such action puts teens that have been preyed upon by older men in grave danger. CWA believes the CCPA will go a long way in putting an end to those very real dangers."
More than half of the states have parental notification or parental consent laws in effect. However, these laws are often circumvented when minors are transported to other states that do not have parental involvement requirements, often under pressure from older boyfriends or at the urging of abortion providers.
Parental notification and parental consent laws are supported by overwhelming majorities of the public -- exceeding 80% in some polls. For a sampling of public opinion polls on this issue, see: NRLC Parental Involvement Polls (People strongly DISAGREE WITH DICK DURBIN AND DEMOCRAT PARTY)

Senate Considers Bill Criminalizing Transportation of Minor Girls Across State Borders For Abortion http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2006/jul/06072404.html
Time to flood the Democratic Senate Offices with calls of outrage about their support for child molestors...
ping
I'm sure this will make it in the MSM.
Maybe that is because it protects her husband Bill from child support from young girls...
Let the afternoon commuters get an earful about this.
Yet, she can't have a tooth pulled without parental consent.
Democrats still think their Village is going to raise our Children.
Or even an aspirin for a headache.
They're either with America, or they are with the abortionists and the pedophiles.
Today's Democratic Party. Standing up for those who wish to molest our children.
Watch a political party implode and commit suicide right before your eyes.
What rubes!!!!
But this is impossible. According to the latest NPR poll the voters trust the dems much more than the Republicans on values issues.
I really think this issue needs to hit conservative radio...
If 51 Republicans voted for the bill they should be able to override the Democrat attempt to kill it. At least that seems like the reasonable way it should go, but the Senate has such arcane rules and procedures that the majority doesn't always rule. IMHO every bill should be passed or rejected by a straight up or down majority vote without any bill-killing amendments or filibustering allowed. I imagine that's also what the authors of the Constitution had in mind when they wrote Article 1.
Pull it from there if you think it does not belong.
Dirty poltical tricks like this need to be much more visible to the average Freeper and Lurker - whether they be Democrat or Republican. (Of course, they normally tend to be Democratic).
The popular support for this bill is about 85% of most of the voters, so the more attention this issue gets, the lower the Democrats will sink in November (seriously).
I have heard of dirty poltics before, but this is such a nasty move that I can't believe how stupid the Democrats are...
What the Democrats are trying to do is use procedures in terms of getting agreement between the Senate and House versions as a way to get the bill killed.
I think the way to get this to blow up in the Democrats face is to publicize it as much as possible. Let Michelle Malkin or Sean Hanity run with it. Or maybe it should be on some of the very popular Fox News shows...
But if there are two versions of bills, this is a way to kill it by using procedures to kill the bill...
Maybe someone who knows more about Senate/House rules can shed more light on this.
There are women senators arguing that the interstate transport of MINORS is necessary for the safety of these MINOR girls. We have real DINGBATS in the US Senate (Diane Feinstein, Hillary Clinton, and others)...
The senate needs to get rid of these rules that allow for procedural chicanery. Why are these damn democrats so hardheaded? The vote was almost 2 to 1 on the bill itself! It is time to run roughshod over the minority and the only way to do that is with a hardcase majority leader.
/sarcasm on; /shouting turned on
WE DIDN'T MEAN TO KILL THE BILL, JUST INJURE THE BILL AND THE LITTLE GIRLS. YOU KNOW HOW THE DEMOCRATIC MEN LOVE LITTLE GIRLS!!!
Abortion and interstate traffic in little girls is a sacred cow of the Democratic party that the FEMALE Liberal Senators defend (I don't understand that one).
This topic just makes me mad. But I was able to poke fun at DNC Chairman Dean with the post before this one with a comment he might be heard shouting this coming Sunday on this topic...
