Under fire Mass. highways chief resigns (Big Digger pockets $223,000 salary til Feb)

BOSTON --Massachusetts Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew Amorello, under fire since part of a Big Dig tunnel collapsed..... agreed Thursday to resign after weeks of pressure on him to step aside----when 12 tons of ceiling panels fell from a Big Dig tunnel, crushing a passing car and killing the passenger.

Amorello's resignation will be effective Aug. 15, but he will continue to receive his $223,000 annual salary through Feb. 15.

Romney has said Amorello has "substantially mismanaged" the Big Dig......has long been critical of Amorello, a fellow Republican appointed by Romney's predecessor, and has repeatedly called on him to resign.

The Big Dig project, which buried Interstate 93 under downtown Boston and linked Interstate 90 to Logan International airport, took more than a decade to complete with delays and cost overruns. It has been plagued by leaks, falling debris and problems blamed on faulty construction.

The collapse led to the closing of nearby tunnel sections and restricted traffic in the nearby Ted Williams harbor tunnel while engineers investigate the cause and devise fixes. The focus has been on epoxy-bolt fasteners that anchored the ceiling panels in those areas. The collapse is also under investigation by state and federal prosecutors and regulatory agencies.

I guess the Big Digger won't be driving the tunnel anytime soon.

I'll bet that he walks away with a full state pension as well and, given his stated salary, his pension's likely to be $100K or more....and he'll get 100% medical coverage for free.

And,like all state pensions here, his will be free of state income tax.

The collapse is also under investigation by state and federal prosecutors and regulatory agencies------so if the Big Digger is convicted of a crime---all bets are off.

Since shoddy workmanship, or design, has cost a life all are looking for a scapegoat. However, none seem concerned as the project racked up billions of dollars of overruns and continued long past the completion date. Politicians and their bosses, the unions and mafia, happily pocketed the graft from the taxpayers with little protest.

"Nice vacation."

I'm sure he doesn't need the money. I'm sure Mr. Amorello's nest is well feathered. Perhaps the "Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act" can be successfully applied?

The PUBLIC dough is just "walkin around money." Anyone like to guess how much this clown has stashed in numbered Swiss accounts?

Everyone knows if they dug deep enough, the Big Dig ends in the backpocket of Ted Kennedy and his "supporters".

so if the Big Digger is convicted of a crime---all bets are off.

Yes,I believe that under state law certain kinds of criminal convictions can result in loss of one's pension. But what will he be convicted of? Mismanagement,I suspect, cannot be punished criminally.Civilly,yes...but not criminally.

Also, this thing's gonna be in the courts (state and Federal) for many, many, many years to come.So if he does lose his pension,it's not likely to be soon.

Yah,pretty much. But the statute of limitations on any crimes that Fat Matt might have committed probably haven't expired as was,I believe, the case with Billy.

Howie Carr should be good today.

True. It's times like these that I wish Howie hadn't gone "national" so he could devote every minute of every show to the subject like Jerry Williams would have done.

Howie will be pivotal in exposing the efforts of various democRAT hacks (from Kerry to Kennedy to Dukakis, etc) to point the finger solely at the Republican governors we've had since the Tank Commander left office.

Look on the birght side. Now they'll be able to develop the world's first rapid transit, high capacity commuter submarine fleet and run it through the Big Dig.
