C’mon, Matt, spare us the grief - and the expense

We were all very disappointed. Matt Amorello, the $200,000 man - and then some - failed to show.

However, the rest of us were packed in tight, more exquisitely-suited lawyers than reporters yesterday at the meticulously renovated $200-million-plus marble, mahogany and leather John Adams courthouse.

Like the Big Dig, and so much else around here, the price tag of Adams’ renovation skyrocketed - from $96 million to $200 million - while other courthouses endured take-your-chances elevators, bad toilets and dirt floors.

“It is somewhat frustrating to have that amount of money spent on” the John Adams “while we are basically working in a toxic waste dump,” complained Cambridge Judge George Sprague during the the Adams/Taj Mahal critique.

Why mention that today? Because it fits with my theme, which is: Watch your tax dollars at work, and feel your head explode.

We can’t afford enough cops to patrol the shooting-gallery streets in tough parts of Boston. But spare no expense on the John Adams or Matt Amorello’s legal team(s).

Leonard L. Lewin, Eric Neyman, Bruce E. Falby, Brooks A. Ames, Traci S. Feit, Andrew Good, Philip G. Cormier and John A. D. Gilmore who has, in case you missed it, two middle initials - those were the Matt lawyers listed on court papers. No doubt there are more.

One Matt brief cost $92,000. Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s David Yas told the Herald it could cost $10,000 per Matt lawyer per day for yesterday’s and today’s Matt hearings, not to mention Matt preparation time.
