Ruby Ridge happened because of a NFA Act of 1933 violation...possession of a shotgun only 3/8 of an inch below the stupid federal law.....
Basically, to a BATF agent, your life isnt worth $hit over inconsistancies of fractions of an inch, RPM, and a $200.00 tax.

It also happened becaues the BATF knew he was dumb and desperate for money. They asked him to cut the barrels off.

And even then, Weaver was coerced to cut the barrel that short by an undercover federal agent. My understanding was that they hoped to use potential charges to bully him into informing on a local militia group.

Ruby Ridge happened because of a NFA Act of 1933 violation...possession of a shotgun only 3/8 of an inch below the stupid federal law..... Actually,
- Weaver was targeted for his beliefs and acquaintances,
- He was entrapped by an ATF informant,
- The weapon was actually legal, when it was remeasured honestly,
- The only valid beef was that Weaver despaired of fair treatment (wonder why?!) and skipped his court date.
Hell of a price to pay for listening to some guy who's a stoolie for ATF, and bailing on your lawyer and your court appearance. Weaver had a slam-dunk win, he just didn't know it. Of course, the feds were jamming him with legal bills he couldn't afford -- guess that's part of the pressure to go along and lie down, right?
