Francis Cardinal George diagnosed with bladder cancer
Cardinal to undergo surgery Thursday
July 26, 2006 (last updated 3:02 p.m.) - Cardinal Francis George has been diagnosed with bladder cancer and will undergo surgery Thursday, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago officials said Wednesday.
George, 69, was diagnosed last week and the surgery will be at Loyola University Medical Center, said Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki.
"He learned about it last week but he has been trying to let family and friends and priests in the archdiocese know about it before the public announcement," Paprocki said.

Prayers to Cardinal George.
Ping
Prayers also.
(When I first read it, I said, NO, the Card's aren't in Chicago!)
May God Bless and protect Francis Cardinal George so that he may continue on with his ministry on behalf of Christ.
I thought they moved to St Louis and then to Arizona.
Why is his title interposed between his name and surname? IIRC, titles or ranks normally go either before the name: "Cardinal Francis George" or after it, with separating comma "Francis George, Cardinal".
Not that one. "John Henry, Cardinal Newman".
That's the custom, but I have no idea why. I think it sounds silly, too. They don't call him "Francis Archbishop George," so why "Francis Cardinal George"?
I'll be praying for his recovery.
A very short answer can be found in remembering that the term "Cardinal" derives from the Latin for "hinge". The grammatical placement of this specific title (as opposed to others) is then seen as acting as a hinge amonst the name of the cleric.
In any event, they will be playing in a new stadium this year on the West side of Phoenix. Indoor stadium with natural grass turf. The whole field actually rolls out of the stadium to grow in the sun. On game day they roll it back in.
Since he is to have cystectomy, or removal of the entire bladder, the tumor must have invaded into the wall of the bladder, rather than just be growing on the surface of the bladder. This invasive bladder cancer can be nasty, and some patients will have recurrence even if there is no evidence of spread of the tumor outside of the bladder at the time of surgery.
My prayers for the Cardinal.
I remember seeing "Bishop" used similarly on few occasions.
Things that make you go "Hmmmmmm."
I guess it's like "Alfred, Lord Tennyson" or "Louis, Earl Mountbatten."
Placing the title in the middle of the name almost seems like an effort to emphasize the title ... "Let's make sure nobody is unaware that I'm EARL Mountbatten, now!"
(But I digress.)
Prayers to Cardinal George, we lost a great one when John Cardinal O'Connor left us.
Prayers for successful treatment and a full recovery.
