DESTIN, Fla. - Charles Barkley, declaring himself a Democrat, said Tuesday he is seriously considering a run for governor of Alabama, maybe as early as 2010.
The Leeds native and former Auburn University and NBA basketball star has teased for years about pursuing the state's highest office, but he told about 900 public school board members from across the Southeast that he's moving toward a decision on the matter.
"I'm serious," Barkley said. "I've got to get people to realize that the government is full of it. Republicans and Democrats want to argue over stuff that's not important, like gay marriage or the war in Iraq or illegal immigration. They push those issues because they play well on TV and because they deceive people.
Well, he'll say anything for attention like McCain...and gambles as well as Bill Bennett.
Actually he is right on the money here, these should not be topics for debate since they are all cut and dry, gay marriage is wrong, the war was right, and illegal immigration must stop.
When we take our political stances from the letter behind a name we lose sight of what is right and wrong.
That part is a stone cold lie. He has said he was a Republican in the past, and I know because I heard him say so myself. LOL
Let me guess, his priorities will be free college, low cost housing for all, health care for all........the usual democrat empty rhetoric. And throw in Kyoto too for good measure.
Barkley's a Democrat? Too bad. I always thought he had some brains. Guess not.

I Tivo'ed some late night show with them on a while back; they were all performing in caps and gowns. LOL.
I would love to see him in a debate...
The problem is that he cold probably get elected...being an Auburn grad he will automatically get all of those votes.
Personal experience: Two years I had the opportunity to play golf (if you can call it that) with Charles. First I'm a middle aged white man. Charles was a pure pleasure. Funny, smart, politically informed and knowledgeable, and most of all - honest. The man played by the rules and called penalties on himself throughout the round. "hey I'm taking a drop over here - stroke on me".
I liked him.
Who knows what the future holds - this might be simply a money play for him.
He's smart - no one can convince me otherwise.

BTW, is he so stupid that he thinks the ALABAMA Democrat Party would nominate a BLACK man for Governor ?

I remember it that way too. Some years ago he made a comment that he told his mother that he was a Republican, and she said: "but son, Republicans are for the rich", to which he replied: "Mom, I am rich!"

Sure Charles. Extending economic marriage benefits to homosexuals has no repercusssions whatsoever. Neither does a decision to go to war - these things are minor, flippant issues.
About 10 years ago, I heard Rush Limbaugh say that Barkley said that he was a Republican and that he would probably run for governor of Alabama, as a Republican.
He is married to a white woman, but has said many times that he hates white people. Sounds like a true dimocrap liberal.
I've met him a few times at the Bruno's Memorial Classic here in Birmingham. I don't doubt anything you said. However, I do know he has claimed to be a Republican in the past despite the spin he tried to put on it in this article. I know it because I heard him say it with my own ears.
Maybe he was just fooling around. He has been known to say things just to get a reaction, but......

I think he is somewhat libertarian actually, he is pro-personal responsibility, and getting a job, that kind of thing, while he doesn't want the government sticking its nose in peoples personal life. At least thats what I've gathered, having heard him ramble of the the last 10 years or so :)

Sorry, I can't reconcile this recent statement of his with your earlier impression of him. I appreciate your personal insight though.
So the war in Iraq, the war against Islamic terrorism, the illegal immigration problem, and our government's failure to address the problems that caused those crisis, are NOT problems - according to this guy?
Now, perhaps he can tell us just what IS a problem that politicians SHOULD be talking about....
He must be running as a racist democrat, talking to liberal racist democrats.
