How does that Hubble thingie work then?

Keep reading. There's quite a few posts devoted to the subject. The short answer is, it takes a very long exposure to capture stars on film or on a digital sensor. Such long exposures are not compatible with taking pictures of landscapes or other astronauts.

Very long is right -- if you are on a soundstage.
