AUSTIN – Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn is siding with a conservative group that is suing state leaders – including her – and accusing them of spending more taxpayer money than the state constitution allows.

Mrs. Strayhorn, who is running against Gov. Rick Perry, is among the defendants listed in a lawsuit filed last month by Citizens for Lowering Our Unfair Taxes, a Houston-based group. Others include Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Tom Craddick. Mr. Perry is not named in the lawsuit.

The comptroller agrees that "the voters meant something when they voted in 1979 to cap spending," said attorney Tim Mashburn, who is representing Mrs. Strayhorn's office in the suit.

Mclelland-Keyton-Raylander-Foghorn-Strayhorn is simply pandering, don't believe a word of her so called turn to the conservative side, after all, she was one of the architects of the program she is now 'suing'...

Strayhorn pandering? Nooooooohhh.

She will undoubtably score some points w/ some folks with this latest move. However, it's the press that's trying to spin this story into a Strayhorn event, like they're spinning it to be about HB 1.

In reality, it's going to be fascinating (for people like me with no life) to see explored in court the process by which the Legislature delegated one of it's key duties to an unelected board, and how that board uses inflated economic estimates to get around the state constitution's spending caps.

At this point I can only say I have one good friend who supports her, but this throws something new into the mix.

There's potential for her picking up a lot of conservative votes, at least in Harris County.

Conservative Votes-Harris County

Isn't that an oxymoron?

Also with the demographic being what they are any state wide candidate has to be at least competitive in Harris county to have a good chance of winning an election.

Not really. The NASA area (north of Clear Creek, Katy and Sugarland and the Woodlands are all in Harris County, and tend conservative. Guess where Tom DeLay is from.

Yeah, Houston is liberal (for Texas), but the 'burbs ain't.

Then you may know how feed up we are with the property tax situation here. To be blunt I was planning not to vote in the governors race but with this I may have to take a Strayhorn. Yes she has a lot of negatives but she didn't just raise a gob of taxes and push a big land grab did she.

Awww...I was hoping you were from Dallas and we could throw rocks. But that's allright.

Anyway, for the time being at least, Republicans hold every countywide office in Harris County. When it comes to Houston, we do have a minority on city council, but still manage to get some shots in now and then.

The property tax situation was mandated to be reduced by the Texas Supreme Court.

Ann Richards Junior thought that a permanent fix could be found in the state surplus, except that the state does not always run a surplus (i.e., 2003-2004.).

There was no easy way to reapportion school funding so that the court would be satisfied.

You don't like Perry, but Strayhorn's solution for Texas public schools was video poker machines in airports.

Strayhorn misplaced $5 BILLION in the state budget two years ago that she magically found after spending three months raking Perry over the coals for HER MISTAKE.

If Strayhorn, by some remote chance, were to get elected, David Dewhurst would be running the state, since Strayhorn has NO support in the legislature.

So. I still do mnot support the solution he chose. He could have cut spending or used the surplus, tow conservative solutions. Instead he chose to be a tax and spend rino. He will never have my vote again. Period.

Also I don not support the land grab to make the nafta highway. I am tired of the Austin cronysim.
