Do you remember the Uniform code of the USAF that required us to wear our dress blues (Class A's) every June 6th? It goes unheeded but it was there. My Colonel was a stickler about that reg.

Never heard of it. When I came in in 1981, we had AFR 35-10. Since then, we have changed to AFI 36-2903. Some things were lost in the conversion.

What was the significance of 6 June?

Well this made it on to his wikipedia page now!

It also says that he retired as a Vice Admiral (3-star). So, what's right?

AF 35-10 from 1972 to 1980 had the provision to wear Class A's June 6th, in honor of the men that died on D Day

I believe that General Officer promotions are considered temporary.

General Officer promotions work the same way as enlisted ones. You have to be in the rank for a certain period of time to retire there. Also, they still do some brevet ranks when there is a major callup of reserves. Generally when the reserves are de-mobilized, the ranks revert.
