As supporters of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, we were disheartened to read Jerry Seper's front-page article Thursday about questions and criticisms of President Chris Simcox's management of the organization. According to the article, the volunteer group has not made any financial statements or fundraising records public since April 2005 -- circumstances that have strained relations between Mr. Simcox and several of his top employees, some of whom have resigned in protest.
Mr. Simcox must resolve these problems quickly. Failure to do so would only encourage the organization's critics -- who have made no secret of their desire to see the Minuteman volunteers arrested for vigilantism. But more importantly, according to Mr. Simcox's estimate, Americans have donated $1.6 million to the corps because they believe in their mission to secure the southern border. In return, the least they should expect is transparency and the assurance that their donations went to help the volunteers in the field. But the truth is that no one except Mr. Simcox knows how much money has been donated and what it has been used for.
So far, Mr. Simcox has been unable to come up with a good explanation -- at least one that can be independently verified. And while he insists the money went to help field operations, workers at these locations tell a different story. For instance, Vern Kilburn, who resigned earlier this year as director of operations for the organization's northern Texas sector, told The Washington Times that only two checks for $1,000 came from Minuteman headquarters in October and that other directors across the country "are having similar problems." Some volunteers said that money promised by Mr. Simcox for food and supplies never arrived. "An awful lot of equipment I saw was donated," said Mike Gaddy,...."

I was talking about the crowd on Free Republic who have an unhealthy fascination with this topic. I'm turned off by them because they are complete phonies. All of them suffer from cognitive dissonance when it comes to President Bush and are demonizing members of the Minutemen not because they are genuinly concerned with the well-being of the organization, but because they hated them from their inception and truly hope to see the organization fail.
I've read your posts in the past. You tend to be an honest guy. Can you honestly tell me that the regulars on this thread are bigger fans of President Bush than the average freeper?
I honestly don't see the conspiracy you're trying to link up here. I did notice this on one of your links though...
Cox says he is a Republican in the tradition of Ronald Reagan and Jack Kemp, favoring "solutions that involve less government, more free markets, more competition, more entrepreneurship."
No wonder you hate the guy.
The regulars on these threads are not conservatives. Google up any of their screen names along with the terms "Harriet Miers", "Medicare Prescription Plan" or "No Child Left Behind" and you'll understand their rabid obsession with this topic.
Are you claiming that you've donated to the Minutemen in the past?
Do you really think these people care about fiscal conservatism?
Dude, 97% of freepers are more conservative than you.
Rex, there's a hell of a big difference between a hard-left organization who publishes slander (and you seem to be so fond of) and a site that hosts undoctored pictures. There's not even a comparison.
If you're talking about only people on Free Republic who are keeping this alive, you have a basic problem, since the threads all stem from outside forces and events, like the Malkin blog, or the WashTimes article, or the WashTimes editorial.
Real events are keeping this alive. Chris Simcox is keeping it alive too, with his Alfred E. Newman approach to serious questions about his outfit.
Is there slander in the material posted in the Simcox threads?
...undoctored pictures...
You are saying it's okay to publish truthful content from a nefarious source, yet you object to the information from SPLC. You must therefore have proof that the SPLC-sourced info is false. Do tell.
I don't have a problem with people who genuinely support the Minutemen raising questions. It is healthy. If there is any nonsense going on, I will be the first to call for Simcox to be prosecuted.
What I do have a big problem with are the freepers who have opposed the Minutemen from the very beginning acting as if they are part of the border security movement and feigning worry about how this might negativly affect the Minutemen when, in reality, they would love to see the organization crumble.
As I previously mentioned, even though I've disagreed with you in the past, you're always straightforward and honest. Can you honestly tell me that my characterization of these folks is not accurate?
You're just uninterested in finding out if there is nonsense going on.
You're right Rex. You guys really are independent thinkers. I mean, I remember how much you guys were criticizing President Bush over his weakness on the border security issue. Oh, and the support you guys have had for Tom Tancredo in the past has been inspiring. I also remember you guys encouraging freepers to donate to the Minutemen when they first started.
I find it really refreshing that border security advocates like you guys are able to think so independently that you raise questions on this topic. It must be really difficult.
She did claim that you can be pro-abortion and anti-gun and still be conservative on a Giuliani thread a few weeks ago. That was pretty out there.
Did you attend college? If so, you should know that it is impossible to prove a negative.
"As I previously mentioned, even though I've disagreed with you in the past, you're always straightforward and honest. Can you honestly tell me that my characterization of these folks is not accurate?"
I think your characterization is dead on accurate. Proof of that is the responses you get from "them".
Any negative response I get from the likes of that crowd, I wear as a badge of honor. I'd rather be against them than with them.
(in most cases)
If there is, Simcox willed be nailed by the IRS. The conspiracies some freepers are posting are nothing but pure speculation.
I'll ask again. Was my characterization of the typical freeper on these threads at least somewhat accurate?
Link it right here. I can wait.
Did you see where they tried to drag Kristinn Taylor into this? When it was pointed out that he runs the FR DC chapter, they dummied up on him really quick.
NOBODY knows anything at this point. The financial details have not been released. I suggest you take a refresher course in logic because I've notice two logical errors from in less than 20 posts.
