During WWII Communists worldwide were initially allies to the Nazis. This was because the USSR and Germany were allies, and jointly invaded Poland.
When the Germans turned on the USSR, and allied themselves with the Japanese who were at that time in China, and possibly fighting USSR as well, the worldwide Communist movement (including those Jews who were affilliated) changed to be anti-Nazi.
There was nothing patriotic about the US Communist behaviour. They were doing what they always do, following the international Communist line.
This explains why a surprising number of Jews are pro Palestinian, and now even pro Hezbollah, pro al Quaida, pro Iranian Mullah. They will support the pro Communist and their allies in whatever circumstance, even if that means the destruction of their homeland, Israel.
Your friend is so offended by Christians and their faith, that he has sold his soul to the party of nihilism, socialism, and death. That has got to be the most insane, bigoted, and self-destructive political attitude I can imagine. I sincerely hope that his attitude is not typical of American Jews ... if it is, this country is in worse shape than I had thought.
Cohen forgets that the Mulims have been enraged by the turn of events since Napoleon's time. The Crusades hardly made a dent in the Muslim consciousness. But the humiliation of Western expansion did. They hate what Cohen prizes most: his liberalism, his nation that his secular view of the world deserves anything but to be eliminated.

To SkyPilot I would say that I more or less abandoned my Judaism because I so rarely heard the word G-d in synagogue and did not get answers or even sense an interest in the spiritual questions that consumed me. However, I am having a second look thanks to Rabbi David Aaron's columns at Jewish World Review and am waiting with great anticipation for this book "The Secret Life of G-d" (Actually he spells out the name which I understand is acceptable under certain circumstances). You might disagree but what he has taught me is that Judaism is more concerned with action than with concepts and the spiritual explanations are in the Kaballah.
Bingo, that is the reason. So many Jews just cannot separate their fear, and it is fear of PubChristiansRightists ala GermanProtNazis that they overlook any Pub agenda which is very pro-Jewish, Israel, family, religious values and keep their conspiracy fear angle going. Dems simply take them for granted, use their money and it is the old FDR coaliton still in tact which is hard to overcome culturally and politically.
Lots of left wing people want to say we shouldn't forget the lessons of Viet Nam. I always reply back that we shouldn't forget the lessons of WW I.
Most people get the lessons of Vietname wrong anyway. The thing about the Vietnam war is that we had BEATEN the Viet Cong by the early 70s. It took the full-scale invasion of a conventional army to make South Vietnam fall in 1975. The US definitely had the firepower to stop that--we could have done it from the air. But, by that time, the Dems controlled Congress and we had lost the will. Of course, it didn't help that the South did a crummy job of defending itself. [Unfortunatley, I suspect the current Iraqi regime would have a similar meltdown if left tommorrow]
