"Much as I'd love the irony of us rednecks being Israelites"
If you are from an old Texas ranching family, you're almost certainly of Jewish origin. Basically all the "big" Spanish families that got land grants were "conversos."
(Now, you wouldn't necessarily be "Jewish" in a purely Talmudic sense, in that it is a maternal line issue.)
Interestingly, the position of SOME orthodox Jews is that the Dome of the Rock is not as distateful as the churches in the area as SOME orthodox consider islam a proper monotheistic religion, closer to Judaism than Christianity, which SOME orthodox consider polytheistic (Father, Son, Holy Ghost).
Personally, I deem this a mis-understanding of the Christian trinity, but opinions vary.
The mere presence of a place of worship to another god (small "g") in Jerusalem - let alone on Temple Mount itself - is an abomination. The Dome of the Crock will be wiped away as if it never existed, and the land that it profaned will be purified.

I strongly agree . . . and the Al Aqsa mosque as well.
