Gore: Take Personal Responsibility To Stem Crisis
POSTED: 2:27 pm EDT July 24, 2006 UPDATED: 2:30 pm EDT July 24, 2006
CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. -- Former Vice President Al Gore said his conscience is regularly challenged by a consumerism that contributes to the global warming he has made it his mission to reverse.
"It is so hard for those of us who want to live according to our values," Gore said Monday at the Chautauqua Institution, during the latest of countless lectures he has given on the topic.
"We're embedded in a culture that makes it so easy to just go with the flow and support a pattern that's horribly destructive," he said. "And so we need to address this personally."
For Gore, it was a return visit to the western New York think tank used by former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, for debate preparation during campaigns. Gore lectured on global warming here in 1990.
Since then, the consensus that the planet is in crisis has grown stronger, he said, and the ability to make the point is not cluttered by campaign issues like the economy and health care.
"This is by far the most serious challenge that we face or have ever faced," he said during the 90-minute appearance. "None of the other ones will matter if we don't get this right."
Later, Gore planned to sign copies of his book, "An Inconvenient Truth." The related documentary film was being shown on campus.

My favorite was tieing up all the Air Force transpo to go to Kyoto.
He contributed more to Global Warming with that junket than many, many SUV's.
He is such a bloated, hypocrite, low life, drug addict, sugar addict, fame addict...
Maybe I will quit now.
Let's see how carbon neutral they want to be in Western NY this January when the temperatures is 10 degrees F and the wind is howling at 70 mph. Turn up the furnace and put another log on the fire - Al Gore be damned.
My goal is to consistently increase my eco-footprint by 10% each year.
LOL! I love FR because of quick witted remarks like yours!! :)
Unfortunately, I don't believe Deuterium is an element.
Geez, what an astonishing *ssh*le.
"Rain Forest" - hmpf - I went to see one of those once, but was major-league disappointed - it had been overrun by a dadgum jungle...
Whoa, he's serial.
He pays money to third world countries to protect the rain forest, and claims the rain forest he is protecting counters out the stuff from his jets and SUVs. Seriously. You cannot make this stuff up, it is too bizarre.
His mode of transport from one of these countless lectures to the next?
LOL!!!
Thanks to both of you for the laughs!
I understand Lieberman is free .....
One can never be really sure with Algore, but, to me, 'carbon-neutral' lifestyle implies being dead.
Just another millionare parading his environmental sensitivity for public relations; what a fraud! Like all people who don't really need to earn a living anymore, Gore can pretend to live in his dishonest fantasy world; the rest of us have to get in our cars and drive to work.
A Taliban existence. That's why Al grew the beard. I don't know why he shaved it off, though.
That's what I heard. He's taking the "trading credits" express (although "environmentalists" don't like it when industries do the same thing). Basically bribing people in the third world to take his money and say they are going to "do something" to reduce the carbon burden in the ecosphere, which somehow magically offsets exactly what Al and his entourage are putting out into the air jetting around on all those private planes telling the rest of us how decadent we are.
For once Gore got it right - plastic packaging takes a lot of petroleum to make it. He is wrong about the melting ice fields - they reemerge during winter. His pictures only show the summer melt which is normal.
Now for some levity, here are some Gore remarks; please add to them your favorites.
