OK, drugs, alcohol, and gambling.

Drugs, alcohol and gambling have been part of the American culture since the very beginning. The culture is in decline because of the loss of the family unit and the growth of the Nanny State.

True, but the family unit has taken a severe beating from drugs, especially in rural America. Drugs have also increased the size of government when it comes to treatment programs, government-provided health services for addicts, services for the homeless, and prisons to incarcerate crack-heads when they get high and commit crimes. To say nothing of interdiction.

Anyone, who's not a complete idiot, can tell by looking at Latino countries what values Latinos will bring here.

A bill has been introduced in Congress, the Latina Adolescent Suicide Prevention Act, to channel $10 million in federal funds to “culturally competent” social agencies to improve the self-esteem of Latina girls and to provide “support services” to their families and friends if they contemplate suicide.

How wonderful! It is now government's job to maintain self-esteem! Perhaps they could buy billboards that read "The sun 'll come out tomorrow!"

I'm a Latino, and I live in a Latino area... and, judging from your nasty comments, we Latinos bring a lot more class and respect than the current dredge or lake bottom fish crap.

I live in rural America. Drug abuse is a symptom, not a cause. The drugs have always been here. They were a minor nuisance before the War On Drugs. The drug war has created this problem exactly the same as alcohol prohibition did. Drug gangs don't care about age or safety.

Drugs have also increased the size of government when it comes to treatment programs, government-provided health services for addicts, services for the homeless, and prisons to incarcerate crack-heads when they get high and commit crimes. To say nothing of interdiction.

Everything you say is true. It is also true that all of this is caused by the drug war.
The drug war has increased, not decreased, drug abuse.
The drug war has increased, not decreased, availability of drugs.
The drug war has increased, not decreased, the potency of drugs.
The drug war has increased, not decreased, drug gang violence.
The only thing the drug war has decreased is the price of drugs.

Thanks to the drug war, 1 in 37 adults living in the United States is in prison or has served time there...the highest incarceration level in the world.
Today, the USA keeps more than two million people behind bars, compared with only 200,000 three decades ago. With 5 percent of the world's population, we account for 25 percent of its prison population.

These people don't get out of prison as better human beings. We are creating a generation of violent criminals that are going to do us more harm than drugs ever could.

I too, unfortunately, live in a Latino area. My town, where I was born and raised, was once a clean, safe place to live. All that was changed by the invasion of the illegals. Please, don't think you can make me blind to the facts.

But some of the rhetoric amongst the "true conservatives" on the anti-illegal threads here verges on the bigoted

And most of the blue-sky, licorice rainbow, cotton-candy clouded, sugar-coated-gumdrop-hills-with-milk-chocolate-streams rhetoric on the other side crosses the line from idiotic to idiotic and suicidal.

Deport her. Then deport her friends and her entire church back to the 3rd world $%*!-hole they came from.

What if her, her friends, and every member of her church immigrated here legally or were born here ?

"Well, you can always go start your own party where black and brown people aren't allowed. It won't be mine."

How about a party where Che wet T-shirt wearing illegal aliens aren't allowed? Does that meet with your race-baiting approval?

I'd also note that the Mexicans just elected a president who is well to the Right of Bush....

That's not saying much.

Not only that, but our legal population of Hispanics has become more Republican in each of the last four biennial elections, and outside of California, they vote something like 50 percent Republican.

That's not true.

A leading pollster of Latino voting trends, Sergio Bendixen, found that as of early February, Bush would receive 34 percent Latino support against an unnamed Democratic opponent -- about the same percentage as in 2000. However, Bendixen said, his polling also showed an unnamed Democratic opponent receiving 48 percent of the vote -- far below the mid-60s level Democrats believe they need among Latinos to win the White House.

Bendixen said the biggest issues for U.S. Latinos are education, jobs, health care, the war in Iraq, and immigration. On that last issue, Bendixen said about 42 percent of Latinos favored, while 20 percent opposed, Bush's new proposal to issue work permits to guest workers in the United States, the large majority of them from Mexico. However, opposition to the plan more than doubled when respondents were told most guest workers would have to return to their home countries at the end of three or six years.

A poll released January 8 by the Washington-based Pew Hispanic Center found that Latinos were less supportive of the war in Iraq and of Bush as a re-election candidate than the U.S. general population as a whole. That poll found that about 36 percent of Latinos support Bush's re-election.

Or here.

New Republican Majority?

Or here.

DNC: GOP Hispanic Outreach Falls Flat; Poll Shows Democrats With 59 Percent to 23 Percent Lead if Elections Were Held Today

Show me where the hispanics are voting for more republicans other than Jeb Bush. Hispanics becomoing more conservative is and always has been a myth.

Ask yourself what the next GOP candidate is going to have to offer in order to just keep the 44% that Bush got. And, he was a popular hispanic candidate.

Here is a bit of what Bush promised. It has to do with promising the hispanics that they will be the "new America". What will the next guy have to promise?

Will McCain, George Allen, Mitt Romney or whoever wins have to walk around with a mexican flag?

THE "NEW AMERICAN"
..........<

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on.
