She d*** well never pulled something over on herself. Nor did she wander off. How many kids do you know that get skinned knees in a store?!
I don't view parenting as architecture - you don't "mold" a child as an expression of your own will. It's more like agriculture - you till the soil and provide water and keep the weeds away - but in the end it (the plant and the child) is going to grow where it's going to grow in its own fashion. I know I'm screwing up the analogy, but hopefully you get the idea.
My daughter did......and she did it while she was "helping" me push the cart. There was something on the floor in the aisle and she didn't see it, tripped over it and skinned her knee. Accidents happen, no matter how close to you the child is, or how vigilant you are as a parent. That has been my entire point all along........you just refuse to acknowlege it.
