I learned some Russian when deployed to Uzbekistan. Class started huge then dwindled to a few when uchiytyel insisted we read flash cards in kirilitsa instead of transliterated. It's difficult but not insurmountable to `hear' words when reading them in cyrillic. Nobody could roll their R's, either.
Still, I bet I speak more Russian than Gorby does English!
