Romney abolishes governor's commission on gay and lesbian youth

BOSTON --Gov. Mitt Romney issued an executive order Friday abolishing the state's 14-year-old governor's commission on gay and lesbian youth after lawmakers overrode his veto of a bill creating a new commission out of the reach of the governor's office.

A spokesman for Romney said he issued the executive order because there was no need for two commissions both focused on the needs of gay and lesbian youth.

Romney angered many gay rights activists and lawmakers when he flirted with the idea earlier this year of abolishing the commission, the first of its kind in the nation, after a press release announcing a youth gay pride march was issued without the administration's blessing.

Instead of killing the commission Romney ordered it to refocus on its core mission of suicide prevention.

The bill approved by lawmakers over Romney's veto would create a new commission, none of whose members would be directly appointed by the governor.

Suicide prevention is all in the definition of the problem. The commission is likely to increase the cases as it overlooks root issues in order to elevate deviancy.

"none of whose members would be appointed by the governor." And the oversight?

Those @)#$!$#'s! I can't believe they got that new commission through an over ride. This is going to backfire big time. They think people are leaving MA now??? Wait!

We may not need to run some Reps out of office, this over ride could eliminate one.

This commission is all about, and nothing less than about, complete control over the teaching of homosexuality in schools. According to Bay Windows, even in pre-school.

A lot of schools in MA have had meetings discussing merging with other towns, and rationalizing school districts thereby closing some, due to declining enrollments. This is only half due to people leaving, the rest are opting out of public school. Even in western MA, which is much more conservative, some towns are facing 30 to 40% decline in enrollment.

No oversight, zip zero Nada. Which is why the Gov. vetoed it. Not only is there no oversight, they snuck it into the budget, so it wouldn't have to face legislation.

This is extremely disappointing, especially since I had heard earlier today, they weren't able to over ride this particular veto.

Thanks for the ping. I am trying to decipher just what is going on here with this and just how [they] are getting away with it...

Seems like a tug of war between those in government who wish to pursue what is legitimate mandate and those in government wish to promote homosexual activity...

Maybe, Romney should have acted quicker on this -like day one of his administration. -- Much like President Bush should have already kicked clintoons don't ask don't tell policy to the curb already...

"...after lawmakers overrode his veto of a bill creating a new commission out of the reach of the governor's office."

This is the second operational government body I have heard of that the executive branch does not control. The first being the Commission that oversees the Big Dig.

Sounds like the voters of Mass need to fix their constitution.

The thing is, there is nothing wrong with the constitution, it's the legislature and the powers that be that control it, that need to be hung. Many of the legislature, no one knows how they managed to get elected in the first place. It's hard to believe towns or cities with population of 20 or 30 thousand show only a few thousand actual total votes.

He definitely should have started acting a lot sooner. It is kinda reminiscent of the discovery of a veto pen, when Romney discovers he has the power to issue an executive order.

He could have done just that years ago and stopped this insanity before it even got started.

No...the Mass Constitution is warped beyond hope......unless they just can every one of the amendments made after , like, 1865. I've tried to study it. No point: it virtually outlaws itself around 1913, IIRC

He definitely should have started acting a lot sooner.

Now he can chalk up abolishing the commission and use it to pander to primary crowds, without actually having to take a stand or accomplish anything.

What a weasel!

So he shouldn't have abolished the commission?

Doesn't make any difference now, does it?

He had three+ years to abolish it and did nothing until the legislature established a new one.

All he did was waffle a little bit (after three years!!!) until the matter was taken out of his hands.

Weasel!
