I think the idea that folks could be at the mercy of events much larger than them, and that they may be 'on their own' for a brief window of time is the most terrifying thought for many in a culture that, interestingly, prides itself on strong self esteem, independence, 'I know what I want and am going for it,' powerful self image, etc.

They key word there isn't within any of the traits I listed, but 'pride' - or rather it's cousin, vanity.

In the end, these episodes make it increasingly clear that despite the rhetoric to the contrary, many (most?) in our culture are remarkably fragile, not quick to adapt and take steps to help themselves, certainly not nearly as independent as they have flattered themselves to be, and probably of no practical use in a crisis.

Of course, we knew that before this incident happened.

I can't stand whiners, especially whining and bitching while they are getting help. How is it that a country of 32 million people has 50 to 60,000 Canadians in Lebanon? You know why? Because the Liberal government didn't mind giving free citizenships to the Lebanese while they were having troubles in the 80's in the hopes that they would vote for them.

These people went back to Lebanon where they live and pay taxes there, and had children that don't even speak English, but now that they are in trouble it is the Canadian government, or better yet, the Canadian taxpayer who has to foot the bill.

Not only that, but I'm sure the Canadian government will provide them with housing, health care, living expenses, and every other necessity while they keep whining about how bad they are treated. Good Lord, they are getting out of this mess for free, and not one complaint is directed at Hezbollah. Go figure.

This is setting a bad precedent in Canadian politics. Next time, when Hong Kong, India, or Pakistan are in trouble, all they need to do is shout for free cruise ships to their rescue.
