Hundreds didn't even have U.S. passports; I still don't understand how they got on the list. I'm late to the thread, so forgive me if you've already answered this, but how do you know what the citizenship and/or passport status was of everyone on the ship?

Those without U.S. passports had to get in a line for some sort of paperwork. Visas maybe? That line was VERY long.
