Is it? Anyone
Actually Disney World is about 20 miles south of downtown Orlando. Universal Studios is about 10 miles south and is adjunct to a honky tonk tourist area called International Drive, which has Sea World and Wet n' Wild as it's anchors, and surprisingly there is a Martin Marietta defense plant very close to the International Drive area.
Downtown Orlando is not to bad, but go west and south of downtown and Colonial drive(Rt. 50 on the map below), that's where the bad area of Orlando is. You wouldn't want to be around the Citrus Bowl at night. Also Rt.441(Orange Blossom Trail) south of rte. 50 to Sand Lake Road is also a hellhole.
Everyone knows about that demographic, it just can't be discussed. The good news is as long as you are careful to live in areas where that demographic doesn't and stay out of areas where that demographic does live and operate, almost any major metropolitan area can be quite safe. There's no need to think "Orlando, ohmygawd, it's a cesspool!" because it isn't. And the influx of illegal aliens is actually having the minor beneficial side-effect of breaking up and dispersing a lot of those traditional disaster areas. The illegals often bring crime problems of their own, but not with the same level of violence.
This kind of reporting is what fools a lot of Europeans into thinking all of America is a crime and shooting-infested hellhole - we would think the same thing if they ran articles like "London Set to Shatter Homicide Record"...but, perhaps thinking of the tourist money, they seldom do. ;)
Winter Park is a nice place, but it is also a place where the addage of growing up on the wrong side of the train tracks is also true.
Ha ha. So true. Hmm, anyone that lives in central Florida knows light skinned people don't go down to Church street and the Trail at midnight. Well, I've been through there at night many time in my younger days, but I didn't slow down.
How about this, go to major city and see what section of town they build the sports stadium in. Yeah, where the property is cheapest. Use your imagination.
Personally, I am very glad to be out of Central Florida. It sucks major league, but that kind of crime is not the reason. It's much too localized in a bad area. And Orlando proper is not the tourist area. It's south of Orlando down to Kissimmee.
The whole area is a stinking ant hill. If it was crime free it would still suck. I went to HS there in the late 60's, and it was a beautiful area and nice town.
Those days are gone forever....over a long time ago, oh yeah.
I worked at Rollins College in the early 70's while going to another (state) college. A lot of the rich kids there were pretty crappy towards those of us that had to work while students. The nicest ones I knew were the scholarship ones without a lot of money.
My brother had a shop on Park Avenue for about 10 years. He used to laugh that if he didn't charge customrs enough they thought they were getting cheated. /snigger
