This is not a surprise. I'm quite disturbed with Israel's disproportional response. I hope they actually know what they're doing and we don't end up having to clean up their mess.
This is the problem with modern notions of war. When someone commits an act of war against you, there is no such thing as a disproportionate response. The appropriate response is to render them incapable of continuing the war.
The notion that a nation will be held at bay because of the worries of a "disproportionate response" is what allows these attacks to be mounted. The attacker does not need to fear that he will be destroyed. He can attack, the attacked will be restrained, and he can hit again another day.
Trying to hold an attacked nation to "an appropriate response" just encourages aggression.
