That photo sums it up.
Depicting a child as an adult is sort of repellent.

Little known fact. The director had to dig a trench for Tom Cruise to walk in for certain scenes while playing opposite Fanning.
why would they do that? I thought they were the same height.

I'm doing my part -- I've only seen one movie this year.BR>
That's one more than I have seen - or plan to. Try it, if you truly want Hollyweird to go broke.

That wasn't even the worst pic. Vanity Fair should be ashamed of themselves...

Substitute 'books' or 'music' for 'movies' and tell me how that statement makes sense.
It doesn't make sense for books because there are some good books still being written. This is less true for the music industry and even less true for the movie industry. When something worthwhile comes out, by all means go and see it. But 99% of what comes out of Hollywood isn't worth the DVD it is stored on.

No, she's actually a full six inches taller than Cruise.

FYI:
Saló is based upon the book
The 120 Days of Sodom by the unspeakably evil Marquis de Sade -- one of the most hideously evil creatures evil to walk this Earth, and, naturally, one of the patron saints of the internationl intelligentsia.
I have neither read the entire book nor seen the film and do not intend to. The subject matter repulses me.

Gaah, those skinny little arms! It kills me to see a child painted up like a courtesan. What the hell is wrong with people?

If you go to see a movie depicting child rape for your entertainment, what does that say about you? If it's not for entertainment, then why are you going?
I went to see 'Schindler's List' which depicted genocide. I've read Lolita multiple times. Was it for entertainment? What did that say about me? Depicting something isn't an automatic endorsement of it.

It looks to be a parody of the "serious actress" Oscar portrait. Probably Annie Leibowitz.

We have to make sure this disgusting film is either never released or plays in as few places as possible.
First, we need to contact the American Family Association and let them know about this movie if they do not already.
Then, we should spark an online campaign directed at movie studios and theater chains. Let them know how you feel and that you draw the line with a 12 year old girl being exploited in this way.
Finally, we need to write to Netflix, Blockbuster and all major video retailers and warn them that perhaps carrying a film like this would not be such a good idea. I mean, if you were running a company like Netflix, would you want to be known for carrying child pornography?
Of course, we could always take a cue from those before us and simply pool money together and offer to purchase all available prints of the film (including the negatives), at which point they would all be promptly destroyed.

Actually most of the books written are pretty bad as well. There's an axiom called Sturgeon's Law: "85% of everything is crap" It applies to politicians as well by the way.

If you can't depict the horrible in films can you do it on stage? In music? In novels? Why should film be treated differently from other artforms? If "the horrible" is being depicted so some sick guy can use it as wank-fodder, then it sinks to the level of porn. Most of the Salo fans I know of are gay guys for whom scenes of people being forced to eat feces are considered entertainmant. Likewise, kiddie-porn fans are going to love this new Dakota Fanning movie.
The point I was making about earlier about the defenders of Salo is that we really don't need a movie to explain to us that rape, murder, and torture are really, really bad. there is enought archival footage and eyewitness testimony of the atrocities of WW2 to make that point clear. If that's the only reason for filming horrible things as entertainment, then it is a weak one, IMO.
Likewise, dramatizing child-rape is showing us that somehing is bad when we already know it to be so. The word "art" gets used pretty loosely these days. I suppose you could call a hip-hopper who extols the virtues of gang-rape and murder an artist, but I would not.
