No plans to commission Belgorod nuclear submarine - minister

15:29 | 20/ 07/ 2006

SEVERODVINSK, July 20 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's defense minister said Thursday the ministry would not allocate funds to finish building a nuclear submarine in the same class as the doomed Kursk submarine and hinted it could be sold.

"The Defense Ministry does not need the Belgorod nuclear submarine," Sergei Ivanov said. "Therefore it will not finance its further construction."

The Oscar-II class Belgorod was laid in July 1992. Its construction, frozen in 1990s, was resumed after the K-141 Kursk nuclear submarine of the same class sank about 100 miles from the Russian northern port of Murmansk.

Ivanov, currently on a tour of military and nuclear test facilities in northern Russia, said several options were being considered for the submarine to be commissioned by another country.

"We are considering options to finish the submarine's construction, but not for the Defense Ministry," he said.

The submarine is reported to be 80% complete and requires $100m to finish the construction.

Ivanov, who is a deputy prime minister, also said the ministry intended to finance overhauling of the Admiral Nakhimov heavy missile nuclear cruiser.

Commissioned in 1988, the Kirov-class Admiral Nakhimov is capable of engaging large surface ships and to defend the fleet against air and submarine attack. Four cruisers were built but only the Admiral Nakhimov and Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great), commissioned in 1995, remain on duty.

Russia seems to be strictly in the mode of arms deals as of late.
The Oscar is a decent foe.
Is Russia forming a proxy war via China?

Looks like China will be getting a new Oscar.

An ASROC can take care of that Oscar

Unlikely.China can build it's own N-subs & has been doing so for close to 30 years. It has limited cooperation with Russia when it comes to it's high-end programmes. The Russians too don't seem keen on offering such systems to China.India is probably a more likely export customer.

But China's N subs are junk. At least the Russians have fine tuned the technology (well, somewhat...better than China anyway).

I bet China could buy this boat for a song, and like that aircraft carrier they bought for a tourist attraction (yeah, right), they can reverse engineer it for a new class of subs.

The first Chinese N-subs were junk-they were built over 25 years ago.Plenty of time to learn from your shortcomings & with plenty of technical help from the Russians!!!!!Why buy a Russian sub which will come with strings attached-just incorporate their technology.Their new Type-093 SSNs are more than sufficient for their needs & they could have built their own SSGNs years ago,if they chose to.

They brought 2 old Kiev class V/STOL carriers from Russia which are being scrapped. The ship you are referring to was purchased from Ukraine.

Russia's military and hardware are in complete "defensive" mode only. Their military is filled with mainly conscripts from poor families. Their budget is entirely for defending its borders, and even that has turned into a joke.
Its not surprising they are scraping such projects. The peter the great is a total disaster and many navy personal refuse to be stationed on it.

Putin and the Kremlins main priority is using its energy reserves to thug the world. THey can't do with with their military anymore.

Several of the Kursk's crewmembers were stationed in Sevastopol (a 'joint' Russian/Ukrainian base on the Black Sea), and had volunteered to staff the new boat during it's 'shake-down'.

The sinking was a bad deal. Putin got a lot of criticism for refusing offers of help from foreign governments (and remaining on vacation during the whole ordeal). The government stated that all the crew died immediately, but divers found several men had survived for DAYS in the stern sections.

The sea is a harsh mistress.

And Putin is a Putz.
