My beloved B-52 cannot go on forever, even though it has already outlived everybody's expectations. I always thought Carter killing the B-1 program (or limiting it severly) was a mistake and I still do.

I remember Fat Ted's bloviations that the B1 shouldn't be built, because it was already obsolete.

And here we are, 30 years later, still flying the B-52....

It can. They are rebuilt every 4 years. It seems to me that with the design being well understood, materials being reasonably cheap (old beer cans) that a production line could be built and have new B-52 rolling out at less cost as designing from scratch....
