The government should not be subsidizing this research. It's corporate welfare, not to mention immoral.
...crushing blow for advocates...
Indeed.
If there really is huge promise in this technology, these researchers should have no trouble finding private investors.
President Bush was always crystal clear about his position on this and now the idiots in California want to act surprised?
Boo-Freakin-Hoo! Cry me a river.
CA: Schwarzenegger gives $150 million loan to stem cell agency (after Presidential veto)
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1669333/posts
``We could get greater leverage out of our $3 billion if we were able to use federally funded facilities currently in place,'' said Klein, who led the effort to pass a stem-cell funding initiative in 2004.
Either the Feds have funded more facilities than are currently in use or Klein wants to take over space that is being used for things that actually show promise.
Gee. Too bad.
Exactly. There is a greater problem if this had been approved. Embryonic stem cell research would become "political medicine" at the expense of more promising adult stem cell work. Just look at what aids research money has done to the NIH.
Well, not having the feds pay my mortgage hampers me--I have to hold a job. And, they don't finance my research projects either--I have to sell product to finance them. That should all change. I'm should get federal subsidies for everything I do.
Look at me! I'm playing the world's smallest violin! ;-)
Don't forget to add that Embryonic Stem Cells cause malignant carcinomas in 80% of test animals.
bears repeating over and over and over.
Some real facts about stem cell research:
http://healthbolt.net/2006/07/20/with-truth-and-stem-cell-research-for-all
To summarize: (1) Embryonic stem cell treatments don't work (cause/are cancer), while adult stem cell (i.e., taken from the patient's own body) treatments exist, are in human trials, and show real hope. (2) The politicians are intentionally ignoring the difference between the two for political reasons.
PS I got this from a poster over on DU! http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2732471#2732968 See comment #6. One of the rare cases I've seen of a poster on DU trying to interject rationality into a thread. If course, the DUmmies ignored it...
"Adult stem cell treatments/cures already approved = 70+
Adult stem cell treatments approved for human trials = 1,000 plus
Embryonic stem cell treatments/cures already approved = 0
Embryonic stem cell treatments approved for human trials = 0
Embryonic stem cell research is Scientific welfare."
BEARS REPEATING. Lots and lots of repeating. Get the word out. This isn't too complex for the average American to understand. The politicos, though, esp. on the left, don't want people to know this because it defuses the "Get Bush" aspect of the debate. And their allies in the MSM have the same view (shock -- NOT).
