UTC Power to Design Fuel Cell for Spanish Submarine

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., July 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTC Power, a United Technologies (NYSE: UTX - News) company, today announced that its UTC Fuel Cells unit will design and develop a 300 kW proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power module for the Spanish shipbuilder NAVANTIA, S.A. for use in the Spanish Navy's S-80 submarine.

The 300 kW PEM fuel cell will be designed to operate on reformed ethanol and pure oxygen. The Spanish Navy will install the new fuel cell power modules on its S-80 model, 2,500-ton submarines as part of the air-independent propulsion system. The S-80 submarines are designed to protect the coastline. UTC Power President Jan van Dokkum said, "We believe the cooperation between NAVANTIA and UTC Power will lead to a technologically advanced, world-class oceangoing/littoral water submarine and reinforce the leading roles of NAVANTIA and UTC Power in their respective fields. This application represents a whole new market for our fuel cell technology."

On 05 September of 2003 the Cabinet authorized to the Ministry of Defense the beginning of the necessary performances for the acquisition of four armament programs for the Spanish Armed Forces by a global amount that ascends to 4,176.87 million euros. These cuatros programs affect the following vehicles: 24 Helicopters battle. 4 S-80 Submarines. A Ship of strategic Projection LL. 212 Vehicles battle Pizarro.

S-80 submarines try the acquisition of four submarines with system of propulsion AIP ("Air Independent Propulsion") and possibility of telling in a future with action missiles on earth, replacing other so many that have finalized their life utility. The necessity to count on these submarines comes motivated to be able to maintain to a permanent patrol in the Atlantic and another one in the Mediterranean to 1,000 miles of the base. The construction of the four submarines supposes a total of about eight million direct hours in the public company TO HOIST, which is equivalent to work for 500 people during ten years and, at least, other nine million hours in the auxiliary industry. Altogether, it supposes approximately thousand people working during ten years in activities of high technological content. On the other hand, the support will make sure those ships in Spain.
