Thanks to a pledge written by a Socialist in 1892, and Congress adding the words "Under God" in 1954, all the American children that grew up in the 50s became God-Fearing Patriots when they became adults in the 60s and 70s...err, wait, maybe they didn't.

And the bible was written by sinners.

I know what you mean!

Then again, no one seems to have set out the case for "under God" correctly. the United States was founded on the political theory that we have certain rights that derive from God - or, to put it a bit differently, from no human source. The concept that all men are created equal, and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, means that the King, or the State, can't take these rights away. Certainly the words were added to distinguish us from the "Godless" communists, but not, I think for the reason most people think.

America has not always lived up perfectly to its founding philosophy, and humans are imperfect and will not always (perhaps only rarely!) correctly divine the will of God. Certainly much misery has been visited on the world by people claiming, and believing, that they were doing God's will.

But to me, it's comforting to know that there is SOME higher authority we look to for guidance (even if it's only meant as a theoretical construct), rather than looking to the state, even a democracy. One need only to look at the efforts of the left to take God out of public society to see that there is a danger when humans think they are the ONLY authority.

Just another idea.

That's how it worked for me.

To our J.A.C. we will always be
Junior American Citizens.
...
And try our best to ride the crest
As Junior American Citizens.
