That salute started in 1892 and ended in 1942 because it was similar to the NAZI salute. Obviously some people think that anyone who loves their country is a NAZI. Of course being a big government socialists who wants to kill anyone who is not their race and blames Jews for all their problems had nothing to do with the evils of being a NAZI. The real evil of being a NAZI was a love for God and their country, or so some would imply.

Probably the 30s, maybe 1940-41, there was a debate on how the flag was to be saluted and they decided against that way because that was thought to be too similar to what the Nazis were using.
