Well, you mentioned the 13th century, and I associate that with Aquinas. There could not be a better remedy for what you are talking about, because that was his challenge. He sought to reconcile faith and reason, especially the empiricism of Aristotle which was being rediscovered.

A couple of years ago, I had a very intense experience with a neighbor. Jesus promised the apostles that he would make them fishers of men, and I unexpectedly found myself on such an assignment. A 70 year old aethist who had had lots of UFO bad experiences was reading the Bible for the first time, and I became her mentor. I was trying to plan myself out and get her a spiritual advisor, and I also thought she should be baptised. I took her to the RC cathedral but she chose to be a Baptist, instead. Fine by me. As this unfolded, I witnessed much evidence of the battle for her soul, and it was awe-inspiring. Yhe mionister who baptised her told her that his children are Catholic. WE call it all the mystical body of Christ.

Fascinating....

Our daughter is writing her PhD dissertation and Aquinas is one of the 'subjects.'

As she studies (raised Baptist her whole life), she is drawn to Catholicism, and I believe the mysticism is part of the pull.

As iconoclasts, the Baptists, IMO, have thrown out the baby with the bathwater.

When you have time, let me know how your 'student' is doing now in the redemptive power of the risen Christ.
