All I can say is, if embryonic stem cell research is the boon to medicine that some say, why is federal funding needed to conduct it?

I understand venture capital is flowing freely to adult stem cell (includes umbilical cord blood) research because early results are so promising and there are many successful cures already. IIRC, embryonic stem cells research started two years before adult stem cells were discovered, and has yielded no results (except to cause tumors).

But we have a bunch of brainwashed fools who let their religion rule their lives.

Having religion rule your life is fine.

I just don't want it ruling the government.

If the legislature passes a budget, then the legislators should have to take the political fall out for it. The president is not congress and I applaud him from not playing the "dictator" role with his veto pen like most presidents. On the other hand, unlike dollars and cents that can be manipulated up and down by all sorts of ongoing votes and issues, KILLING INNOCENT LIFE cannot be undone. Good choice of veto power.

Be prepared for the onslaught, STARWISE.........starting on this very thread.

The cynicism and mockery is palpable.

Verifying that the President has done the RIGHT thing. The Enemy is not happy.

I didn't completely misread his character after all.

I said long ago If he ever exercised a VETO, he'd do so on this.

Seems I was right about it...and him. Actualy restores some of my sentiments about him.

Thank you Mr. President.

Hi Soul Seeker,

Isn't it amazing that this thread brought out all the usual BushBasherbots, almost as if on cue? Oh well. I guess these same people had no problem with Bubba overturning and reversing protections on the unborn almost the second he got in office.

Que sera, sera...whatever will be, will be...

At least you give the apple seed the dignity of calling it an apple seed.

There are not nearly enough votes to override his veto.

Take a look at how much the major parmaceuticals spend of their own money on R&D, compared to the huge amounts of profits their receive. Pfizer and others put only 1 of every 5 dollars into R&D, while their profits are up by more than 33%

Pfizer has a big plant in my hometown, and out county council voted to give them a $250 million tax abatement for a new facility.

If the average auto company were run like the average pharmaceutical company, then a typical car would cost more than $250,000.

You prefer to have the government spend YOUR money to end human life?

What an interesting 'conservative' perspective you have.......

But we have a bunch of brainwashed fools who let their religion rule their lives. Pathetic.

You keep confusing religion with morality. Everyone has a belief system, i.e. religion, which directs their moral decisions. Yes, even you.

Based on the promises made? Based on the successes of adult stem cell research? Yes, I'd classify it a failure to date.

If it was the success they had promised and believed it to be, they wouldn't need government funding. Government is applied for by Amtrak, we subsidize farmers NOT to grow agricultures, we subsidize the airlines to prevent bankruptcy. If it's such a success, the private sector can provide funding that far surpasses any contribution the Federal Government would contribute.

PRESIDENT Bush goes against the majority of Congress and 70% of American people

First, where do you get 70% of the American people. It seems to me that in November of 2004 the majority of the American people voted for what the President just did.

Second, the majority of CONgress goes against the majority of the American people ALL, if not most, of the time.

If you listened to the President, HE is NOT banning embryonic stem cell research. You are more than welcome to do so with your OWN money - keep your hands off my wallet.

The President is forbidding CONgress from FORCING me to pay for this mess.

THANK YOU PRESIDENT BUSH!!!

Giving Federal money to firms to do R&D is corporate welfare, glad that the President vetoed it. Just say No to Corporate Welfare.

Shrubbie, You're doin' a heck of a job!

Coming from the number one McCain supporter on this forum. Using language commonly spoken by Liberals. If this VETO provokes this reaction from you, all the more praise for the President is forthcoming from me.

The embryo or little bunch of cells or whatever you guys want to call "it" would not eventually become a candybar or mountain lion - the little bunch of cells that came from your parents egg and sperm meeting became you and if your bunch of cells had been used for research you would never exist. The next meeting of egg and sperm would be someone else.

Your question is not entirely clear, but I believe the answer is that by "separating" the "cells" you have created a new life.

Suppose we take a fertilized embryo, allow it to divide once, and then separate the two daughter cells. This is almost the same as what happens to produce identical twins. We implant one embryo, where it goes on to be born.

Can we do this? What do you mean by "almost"? Will this action in fact produce two embryos? I truly don't know, do you? If it can't, your question is a bit of a strawman.

That said, I'll assume the premise is valid and answer your question. You said

If you think we have destroyed a human life, then explain why, since we have the same human being we would have had had we done nothing.

But that's the thing - in the scenario you described, we DID do something. A second life was formed. There's no going back, at that point.
