On the Border, in a Fix
LA Times ^ | July 19, 2006 | Nicholas Riccardi

Nogales, Mexico, feels overrun by migrants: the ones booted by the U.S. Officials say they boost crime, fill shelters and strain services.

Ana Arredondo knows who broke into her car on a downtown street and stole her stereo the other afternoon. She's sure it was one of the immigrants who crowd the byways of this teeming border town.

"Look at the type of people you see in the streets here," Arredondo, 26, said with disgust. "Almost all of them end up committing some kind of crime."

...

Up to a dozen times a day, a white bus pulls up across the border from Nogales and unloads migrants the Border Patrol in Arizona has caught trying to enter the U.S. illegally. The deportees flood the city's shelters and strain public services as they try to raise money for another illegal crossing. Increasing numbers of them have come from southern Mexico and Central America, drawn by rumors of amnesty.

...

"Our crime rate has been going up because the only thing they've got is the clothes on their back," said Mayor Lorenzo de la Fuente. The cost of illegal immigration "keeps going up and up…. We can't handle it.

...

About 500 people are deported daily to Nogales, Mexico ... 10% eventually give up on trying to emigrate illegally to the United States. The deportees become part of a city that's in such disarray that no one can even agree on its population — the government census says 150,000, but local officials and academics alike say that's an extreme undercount. City Hall puts the number at about 300,000.

...

"Nogales is the result of bad decisions made by both governments," said Francisco Trujillo, who runs the Mexico office of the nonprofit group BorderLinks, which conducts educational tours along the border ...

But Nogales has been struggling with the costs of illegal immigration in ways that few U.S. cities can imagine.

PAH!

The LA Times wouldn't be reporting it if an American town on the USA side of the border was having the same woes. Actually, they don't report it.

If only they had been allowed to stay in the states the would stop committing the crimes and would be doing the jobs Americans won't do. (sarc)

I have an unanswered question. If these people are so poor, how do they accumulate the money to pay the coyotes, in the first place? The coyotes are paid up front, that is why so many invaders are left in the desert to die or not! Why can't we just shoot these "coyotes"?

We know how the folks in Nogales feel. We have the same thing . People arriving with nothing but the clothes on their back, filling the hospitals with their anchor babies, carrying Mexican flags in America and demanding to be treated like citizens.

I have theories. Of course, many of those crossing these days are doing so on the bucks from mowing Sam's lawn down the street.

As for the coyotes, every invader crossing our border could be shot. They cost American lives and livelihoods. Tehy rape and pillage, and then we give them three hots and a cot, release them back to Mexico (occasionally) and arrest them again two years later, after their newest spree! MS13 is just one of the problems. Osama's friends may be the next!!!

Is this article the most ironic piece ever written. A town in Mexico crying that "immigrants" are causing chaos and crime.

Where are these "immigrant" from?

Bizarre.

This is just too funny.

Wonder if the illegal lovers who love to throw the "racist" term around whenever one speaks bad about their illegals will jump on this thread.

This is from a Mexican. It's funny how if a white person said this, they would be an evil racist who is full of bigotry and hate for anyone who isn't of European descent.

This is too bad, Nogales was a good party spot back in 1997 and 1998.

I think we should ask the people who live there to have the Mexican government take custody of those deportees and transport them farther from the border so that border town doesn't have to suffer so much from the problems these migrants cause.

It's the Mexican government's responsibility to deal with them once they are returned to Mexico.

I'm sure Nogales is paying a high price, but it's is neither the fault of the United States, nor our responsibility to fix it.

It may very well be worthwhile for the US to send deportees to a point in Mexico far away from the border, but if the US decides to do so it should be based on the benefit to the United States, not based on assisting the Mexican city of Nogales.

Yup.
It's their country.
You can't be an "illegal immigrant" in your own country.

Several Denver media outlets have done extensive "on the border" reports recently, and have found that the coyotes are not typically paid upfront. The coyotes are a form of organized crime. The border crossings are paid for by loans with high interest rates. The illegals are usually guaranteed three attempts to cross for the typical $2k fee. Once the illegal is in the U.S., they wire payments back to the coyote organization. The illegals sometime mule drugs in as a method of payment to the coyotes.

You sure can in the Upside Down world we live in.

I can't see why the LA Times even wrote this. It's such a rip on the illegal problem and it also shows the "bigotry" of fellow Mexican Citizens.

Afterall, in POp Culture, it's bigoted to shine the light on criminal behaviour.
