Taiwan wants to buy Aegis equipped ships but the U.S. has been hesitant for a couple of reasons to sell them. One is of course ticking off the Chicoms. The other is if by some strange chance Taiwan did rejoin the mainland, then the PRC would suddenly have access to our most advanced warships.

Right now there are some decommissioned Ticonderoga class CG's that could be quickly refitted for service with Taiwan.

The strange chance is increasingly a possibility if we do not equip Taiwan with the right weapons.

third reason: possibility of compromise by chinese espionage agents operating on Taiwan or by Taiwan
personnel enticed by China using the usual means
(money, coercion, sex)

The decomissioned Ticonderoga class ships are fine ships by the ROCN's standards, but their electronics are pretty old by the standards of new AEGIS ships & they don't have the MK-41 VLS & use conventional arm launchers. These could be very useful for limited anti-air & anti-sub work if Taiwan could modify them to fit in a 32 cell MK-41 for ESSMs & ASROCs.
